"A beginner must learn the grip, how to concentrate and the proper stance for hitting,” he explained. Rangers Maul Giants , Lose To Orioles As they have done on two other occasions this “season, the Mecklenburg Orioles snapped a Morris Field Win ning streak. Manager Minnie Mendoza's super crew turned back the Rangers Sunday afternoon, 4-3 before the largest crowd to witness a semi-pro baseball contest here this season. The Orioles, now 20-1 and leading the Jackie Robinson League by a wide margin, had to come from behind to accomplish their third straight verdict over the Ran gers, who now have dropped only 4 of their first 21 contests. Koster, who came on in relief of Bert Cueto, got credit for the win and Lafayette Currence absorbed the loss Currence took over the starter Ricky Summers in the seventh. Morris Field went ahead on a long time home run by Albert Turner in the second inning and they stretched the margin to 2-0 with a pair of hits and some nifty base run ning in the third. The Orioles got back in the contest with two markers in the seventh, but Morris Field got one back in the third to take a 3-1 advantage A base hit, walk and two Ranger errors let in a Oriole run in the eight to tie the game for the second time and the Oriole produced the winning run on Nester Vales quez's single to go ahead for good in the top of the ninth Herman Thomas's sharp crew whipped the Hoskins Giants. 7-1, Saturday after noon behind the fine pitching of Chris Hill, who wiffed II and walked five In the meantime, Tim Mor ris, Bobby Reynolds, Randy Falls and Kevin Staley were leading a 10-hit Morris Field attack against Benny Little and Floyd McDowell Morris set the pace with three singles and as many rbi's Reynolds contributed two doubles, Falls a single and a double and Staley a home run I Strong, a former number one golfer at Johnson C. Smith University, has won eight golf tournaments in a row. These include winning the Ridge wood Tournament in Colum bia, S.C. a tournament which included Lee Elder and team ing with James Bouler to win the Par Busters tournament here in Charlotte recently at Sunset Hills. “I’ve won two sets of woods, a set of irons, a dozen golf balls, and golf gloves in recent weeks,” he told the Post. His sparing partners include Otto Gamble, Bernard Thompson. Melvin Griffin. Keith Marshall, Shelley Law rence and Preach Moore. Strong is an offset print maker who also operates Strong's Janitorial Service. He said he doesn't want to have to depend on golf to make his living and enjoys just playing on the weekends. The 28-year-old 1967 graduate of West Charlotte High School said he got his start when he was caddying 12 years ago at Quail Hollow Country Club. "I got my first set of clubs that year and I became exci ted about the game But I really didn't overly exert my self and considered golf as more of a leisure type of sport. It was something different to do, " said Strong Now it is still a leisure sport for him, but winning and performing means more to him than it used to. Cedarwood is the best course in town according to Strong because he likes the layout and the challenging greens and fairways. When he is not on the golf course or at work, he is entertaining Rose Morrow, his fiance of the past few years. Charlotte area golfers have begun to recognize and appre ciate a Strong game i pardon the pun) I-1 *|ANT ?os\ Merchants Who Advertise In The Post Are Tell Telling You They Appreciate Your Husino^.
