Martin Sr. CBS To Rebroadeast "West Side Story" Tuesday Night Dehaeva Marie Drake, 22, of Lumberton was crowned Miss Black America of North Caro lina for 1978 last week in Winston Salem. Miss Drake will compete in the August finals in Philadelphia for the national honors and a (5,000 academic scholarship. No sooner than did HEW Secretary Joseph Califano and EEOC Chairperson Elenor Holmes state in separate tele vision interviews that the Bakke decision would have little effect on federal efforts to increase minority represen tation in education and em ployment, the high court let stand a race and sex quotas system adopted by the Bell Telephone Company and chal lenged by three labor unions. In a similar move the Cnurt upheld two UNC rules guara nteeing blacks representation on the 16-campus UNC campus Governing Council. The second ruling permits continuation of the practice of having four of the seven judges on a disciplinary panel to be of the same race of the student appeal before it. The Carter Administration is considering a national health-insurance plan to be implemented in stages, with each increase in coverage occurring only if health costs are under control. Proposition 13 godfather Howard Jarvis is planning a national organization to conti nue the drive for tax and government spending re forms. Two black doctors, Reginald Hawkins, a Charlotte dentist, and Wilmington physician Hubert A. Eaton Sr. reporte dly charged recently that the state's Medicaid system prac tices and condones racism because of failures to pay doctors for the full services given to poor blacks. Dr. Rolland Jones, fired as Charlotte-Mecklenburg school superintendent two years ago, has been employed as school superintendent of Baldwin, a subdivision of Long Island, New York. In somewhat a poetic fashion, Jones will be the educational head of a district one-tenth the size of the local school system but with a 25 percent increase in salary to $50,000 per year. A ground-swell of protest has begun by three black ministers over the District Attorney's office charge of murder against a black man, while the wife and her lover who planned the husband's murder, are facing lesser pen alties. The murdered victim, his wife and her lover are all white. Larry Doby, one of the all-time great black baseball super stars who followed Jackie Robinson into organi zed baseball, was named last week as manager of the slumping Chicago White Sox. ...Read the Charlotte Post each week. "West Side Story," the screen classic which won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture of the Year, will be rebroadcast on "The CBS Tuesday Night Movies," Tues day, Jidy 11, at 8 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3. The movie, based on the smash Broadway musical, stars Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblyn, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris. Miss Moreno and Chakiris won Oscars for their perform ances in the movie, an up dated version of "Romeo and Juliet" that takes place on the streets of New York's West Side. In the story, two rival gangs -the Jets, headed by Riff (Tamblyn) and the Sharks, led by Bernardo ( Chakiris ) are observing an uneasy truce when both decide to attend a neighborhood dance. During the dance, Jet mem ber Tony (Beymer), who has been losing interest in gang life, reluctantly agrees to back Riff in challenging Uie snarns to a rumble. A time for the fight is set, but before the night is out, Tony meets and falls in love with Bernardo's sister, Maria (Miss Wood). Maria is equally enthralled Cheek the ads in the Char lotte Post each week for the best bargains in town. by her brother's enemy. They marry. But Tony faces a dilemma. Either he backs out on his closest friends or he comes into violent conflict with Maria's brother. Miss Moreno plays Anita, Bernardo's sweetheart and Maria's confidant. Leonard Bernstein com posed the score for the musi cal drama and Stephen Sond treim—wrote the lyrics. The songs, many of which have become standards, include: "The Jet Song," "Something's Coming," "Maria," "Ameri ca," "Tonight," "Gee, Officer Krupke," "I Feel Pretty." "One Hand. One Heart."
