Rev. Chavis
Released From
Intensive Care
By Linda Florence
Post Staff Writer
The Rev. Ben Chavis of the
Wilmington 10 was released
from the Intensive Care Unit
Of Central Prison Hospital in
Raleigh on Friday.
Two weeks ago, Chavis suf
«Îered a severely ruptured
•Œppendix with the complica
tion of an infection. He was
Jed intravenously during the
"10 day intensive care period.
"He's making progress,"
Mrs. June C. Davenport,
■ Chavis's sister and member of
the Wilmington 10 Defense
Committee, said Wednesday.
"He's been extremely ill
and our main concern right
now has been trying to get
him better," Mrs. Davenport
explained.
Chavis reportedly began
experiencing pains in the sto
mach after eating the noonday
. meat at McCain Prison at
..McCain, N.C. on June 19.
' He was not permitted to see
the prison doctor until Tues
day morning. "Evidently,
.. they didn't realize the severity
of the pain at that time," Mrs.
" Davenport suggested.
' The doctor diagnosed the
* illness as an appendicitis and
j . suggested that Chavis be
rushed to a nearby hospital.
However, Chavis was placed
on a stretcher in the back of a
; station wagon and sent to
Central Prison Hospital in!
Raleigh which is some 120
- miles away. <><■ ». .x
vc~>;trhe .family xtoctoe iwaejei;
£ quested to be called in but
0 prison rules won't allow any
doctors outside—the prison
" to check on inmates.
Mrs. Davenport said he felt
the prison doctors were
ί "doing the best they can under
'·' the circumstances."
But you know, you'd feel
better if a family doctor could
,. be present," she said.
So far only family members
have been allowed in to see
Chavis with the exception of
Lennox Hinds, head of the
National Black Lawyers Asso
ciation and the Rev. Leon
White, head of the Commis
sion for Racial Justice for the
! United Church of Christ.
Ben is a minister with the
United Church of Christ.
"With prayer and God's
help, Ben feel that he'll be able
' to make it through," Mrs.
' Davenport concluded.
