July 4,Independence Day is a holiday comme
morating the time when America gained its
freedom from British Colonial rule. Americans
really whooped it up when this freedom was
finally granted, and since that time July 4 has
been an annual holiday.
The festivities for this holiday range from
family back yard cookouts to large class
reunions, from traveling coast to coast, to just
staying to home.

SPECIAL Ε VENT...The Metrolina Chapter of
National Organization of Women (N.O.W.) is
chartering a bus from Charlotte to Washington,
D.C. for all people interested in participating in
the July 9th National March to support the ERA
Extension. The bus will leave Saturday, July 8
and return Sunday, July 9. Transportation cost
is $25 per person. For more information about
the march, the trip, and overnight housing, call

Dance last Saturday night at the National Guard
Armory.

"FREAKY" TEA...The lovely young ladies of
the BLACK CHARISMA SOCIAL CLUB will
sponsor what they call a "Freaky" Tea, Sunday,
July 9, at the Elks Home 3313 Tuckaseegee Rd.
This sip, snack and freak function will begin at 4
p.m. and last until the last tired body leaves.
CLASS REUNION...Second Ward High School
Classes of 1936 and 37 held their second annual
class reunion last weekend at the Holiday Inn
North, 3815 North Tryon St. in the Wagoner
Convention Center.
This meeting of class members began last
- Friday evening with the registration of partici
pants from 4-6 p.m. and a cocktail session for the
classmates from 7 p.m. til 12 a.m. in the
Convention Center.
However the big day was Saturday, July 1,
whprp thp srhprinlp of all day activities ranged
from a class meeting that was held from 10
a.m.-12 p.m. through a disco dance from 9 p.m.-l
a.m.
Group worship services were held last Sunday
at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 1801 Oaklawn
Ave., which ended a very wonderful weekend for
the 1936 and 1937 class members of Second Ward
High School.

GOLF FUN..."The Sportsmen 5" will sponsor
a 4 ball golf tournament at the Revolution Golf
Course, Saturday, and Sunday, July 22 and 23.
There will be an abundance of trophies and
prize· given away to the better 2-man teams in
each of four flights.
FIRE WORK FUN??? According to the very
petite ANGELA CALDWELL, misery is trying to
mingle with 62,000 people at Freedom Park's
annual display of fireworks held every July 4.
Her companions in this venture were Cassan
dra Rom, TaDonya Ross, Patansa Coleman,
Torrence Wade, Donnie Ardrey, and Shiquisha
Caldwell.

Court ruling in the Allan
Bakke reverse discrimination
suit does not "deal a death
blow" to affirmative action
and the civil rights movement,
Vernon Jordan. National Ur
ban League President said
Friday.
While Jordan considers the
decision a setback, he said
that anyone who contends the
ruling is "a death blow" is
simply adding to the problem
Jordan, speaking to commu
nity and corporate leaders at
the Radisson Plaza Hotel, was
in Charlotte to assist local
efforts to bring a chapter of
the Urban League to Char

Bakke had been illegally
denied entrance to medical

He said he agrees with the
