By Rev. Waylon R. Wallace Sunday School Lessen 1 Greetings fellow Bible stu jents! Paul ministers still : through his letters to the . church at Thessalonica Our lesson for the week is found in chapter 4, verses 9-18. The subject is, "People With Hope." j The people with hope are those who have united their ; Uves with the life of Christ, j The people of Christ ought to ; be joyful and positive thinking ffolk. Hiey are so because they jhave experienced for them : selves the power of His pre :sence and therefore trust in •Him rather than other folk, : things or their circumstances. They are people who have come to realize that God is at work in all things to bring about our good. Paul encourages the people of hope to increase their love. He knows that they have been ^aught to love by God, but T'aul has the duty now of teaching them how to love. So many of us are taught to do many things we never do. The Bible would have us know that those who know to do good and do it not, to them it is sin. So much difficulty today in mar ried and family life arises not [so much from an absence of love but from an inability to «xpress love or receive love. [Furthermore, as time passes, [our love should increase. The ['love roots' of a marriage should grow deeper and deep [er with each passing year. It should be so between friends, family members and church members. Jesus said, "By •this shall the world know you sfue mine, by the love you have one for another." What is the reputàtion of your church members in town concerning [their attitude toward each [other. Does the world know lyou are the possession of [Christ? i' Paul recommends some very practical ways for church folk to express their [love for each other. He suggests that w.e learn to be |ul^£(>me-ijJb«reJMolk taUc ™ too much, not knowing what they are talking about. No one can learn with his mouth open. : Someone has said that God has blessed us with two ears [and one mouth from which we jphould learn to listen twice as much as speak. People who talk too much soon run out of Something worthwhile to say. j Paul would have us show bur love by minding our own business. How much distress is caused in our homes and ^lies by meddling. If we d mind our own business _weU. we would have no time to mind other's. L- Paul tells those who are able ■40 work. Many in the early [fhurch thought that Christ would return very soon. Be cause of this belief, some decided that jobs were of no ^KJPRov Waylon Wallace I value anu would not work. But, these same people attempted to abuse their fellow church members by living off the ones that did work. They demanded that others share with them in the name of Christian love. Paul tells them to work on the same grounds. But, Paul reminds those with plenty to be honest with those who had legitimate needs. Paul tells us that the people of hope should not sorrow and mourn at the death of loved ones or concerning their own deaths as those do who have no hope in Christ. Paul does not want us to be ignorant of filled superstitions. There is no shame in mourning and expressing sorrow, but the Christain should have a faith that prevents him from being totally crushed. Those who have fellowship with Christ should know death is separa tion not aniliation. Death is not the end. Furthermore, Jesus said, "And I, if I be lifted up from the earth will draw all men unto me." ram comtorts the Thessalo nians concerning death and Christ's return and tells them to comfort others with the same words. Paul shares his belief that Christ would return soon and that some of thena would be alive when he did so. Paul believed that when Christ came back that He would appear in the clouds above the earth, that a trum pet would sound and all the dead Christians would arise first and be joined later in the clouds by the living Christians to go home to be with Him forever. These words were of great comfort to this church that was suffering so greatly because of their faith. Allow them to be a source of strength and encouragement to you also.
