By Rev. Waylon R. Wallace Sunday School Lesson Il Greetings fellow Biblè students! What a timely lesson we have before us. "The Gospel Confronts Vested Interests," is our subject. The lesson is found in Acts 19:21 41. As this is being written, the Rev. Andrew Young, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations is yet receiv ing sharp criticism for declar ing the truth. He finds himself among that great company of God's persecuted servants. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a part of that group, as is Jesse Jackson and our lesson re veals the Apostle Paul as their example. In our lesson we see that Paul has been preaching in Ephesus against superstition and idol worship. He is beginning to make plans to leave, when he finds out how effective his efforts have been. A silversmith by the name of Demetrius made his living from the sale of small images of the Goddess Diana. His sales had fallen off and so had those of the others merchants who sold images of false gods. He called all the other merch ants together with their employees. He let them know pointedly that the source of their income was in danger because Paul was preaching that Gods made by hand are not gods at all. Demetrius did not mind Paul preaching that message, what bothered him was that the message was effective, people believed it! He hipocritically stated that he was concerned that their business not get a bad name. Demetrius, a man of previous greatness, successfully stirred up the crowd by telling them that the Temple of Diana was in danger of becoming meaningless and that her greatness was in danger of being lost. Brothers and Sisters, any religion that can be destroyed by the efforts of humankind ought to die! When religious symbols, whether they be buildings, Ëlry, or rituals become so ective. that thajuçan be •oyed fry peopl th<$ Way Ion Wallace I ought to be buried Tway. Demetrius stirred up the folk by telling them that their religion was in danger, when his only real concern was with his profits. When Paul was not immedi ately found some of his associ ates were taken to the town meeting place. A town meet ing was called. The citizens did not know for what purpose. There was confusion and yell ing for two hours. Finally the town clerk, a Roman official, calmed the crowd by telling them that they should not be upset just because some one speaks against things they themselves knew to be true. He declared Paul's associates to be innocent of any wrong. He directed them to take proper legal steps if there was a legitimate complaint against anyone. The point of this lesson is r—i«- J — — *4 _î-j a» ···%·« ·ν·η ViU II » I1I1IIU HIV preacher preaching as long as his preaching is not effective. People don't mind Christians witnessing so long as their wit ness does condemn their wrong doing. Employees don't want the preacher to tell them to give their employer an honest days work. The employer does not want him to preach about fair wages and employee benefits. Many business men do not care if those working for them have no day of rest in the week. Folk don't mind us firing the shotgun of abstract theories from the pulpit, at such a distance that we hit nothing. What they hate is for us to take careful aim with the rifle of God's word and hit something. The politician says the preacher has no business talk ing about politics and the cowards obey. The love we are called upon to give to God and our fellow creatures, is expressed positi vely or negatively in every area of our lives. All need to hear the gospel, for all have sinned and come short of the glnriniis iriatil find hnr for our lives. (, . bruire η iMeivs ifriep Rev. James E. Palmer Perseverance means stick ing to a point, holding out, not giving up In plain simple everyday language, it means - keep on keeping on Christ ians must never give up. Nehemiah had accepted the challenge to build the all of Jerusalem and three times he was invited to meet with San ballat and others This would mean giving up his work for a meeting, a meeting of no good purpose. Me replied to the messages "I am doing a great work, so I cannot come down." He had to work under oppo sition, but he had faith - to keep on keeping on. When his powers ran out he could al ways count on the power from on high. He knew man's extremity is God's opportu nity. Faith is likening to a boy flying a kite. An elderly man came by and said "Son what are you doing?" The boy replied "Sir, I am flying my kite." The man said, "I don't see any kite." "How do you know you are flying a kite?" The boy replied, "every now and then when the wind blows, I can feel it pulling " That is the way it is with a child of God. When the tempesteous winds of circumstances of a stormy world begins to blow children of God who holds the spiritual kite, not with hands but with hearts, can feel in faith and know of the presence of God Nehemiah kept on working, his body fatigued, he had a song he could sing It could have been: I'm working on the building, It's a true foundation - As soon as I get through, I'm going up to Heaven to get my reward There are three ways to tace trouble. You can face trouble like a chicken in the rain. When it begins to rain, the chicken immediately runs for cover, or you can face trouble like the duck in Ihe rain. The duck goes splashing through the water as if to say it is raining, so what? This is the don't-care attitude. You can face trouble like the robin bird. In the rain the robin bird ascends to the top of the tree 'and begins to sing. What a wonderful way to face trouble with, with a song. Finally, the wall was completed, the battle was fought and the victory was won. On the twenty-fifth day of the month of Elul according to the Jewish calen dar the task was completed. Nehemiah could then come down and stand before the Altar of God and receive his reward for a job well done The question for us is "Why did Nehmiah succeed-'" I believe that there are three reasons that account for his successful accomplishment I. He had a constructive program This program was practical and designed to meet the needs of the people This program was good for the people even though it was not always good to them Nehe ni ι d π recognizea mat His people needed God Thus, he propagated a program esta blished on the pillar of truth As in our day, people didn't appreciate truth. Probably the truth is too slow for people Charles H. Spurgeon says, "A lie travels around the world while truth is putting on its boots. Yet, truth is the onlv thing that will stand James f^ussell Lowell expressed something of the power of truth when he said "wrong forever on the throne, truth forever on the scaffold, yet that scaffold sways the future and behind the dim unknown standeth God within - the shadow keeping watch above his own " His program was characte rized by love l>ove is the strongest emotion of the human heart l/>ve will cause one to toil and not ask for pay, to suffer and not count the cost God is love, and all love is from God God demonstra ted the Power of love in giving His only begotten Son to redeem sinful man. Nehe miah demonstrated the power of love in building the wall of Jerusalem in the fact of great opposition. 2. N'ehemiah succeeded in building the wall because he was a man of great faith. (a) He had faith in himself. If a person does not have faith in himself others will not have faith in him To have faith in oneself does not mean that a person is self-centered, egoi stic or egocentric But it does mean that he is confident and assured One of the methods most frequently employed to defeat people is to get them to believe that they are worth less by destroying their faith in themselves All one has to do to be nobody is to feel that he is nobody. ib) Nehemiah had faith in man He did not attempt to build the wall by himself, but he enlisted the help of the entire family of God. Any man is in a bad fix who feels that he is the only person who can be trusted No race, or group or class has a monopoly of "efficiency " God made men out of one blood < c » Nehemiah above all else had faith in God He 1 new that there were times when his own mind and the minds of others proved to be helple ►x-fore the forces ol evil ι new that what man. a fin reat ure cannot do, can be done by God whose power and wisdom and love is infinite and eter nal 3. Nehemiah succeeded in building the wall because in the face of hardship and diffi culty he could keep on keeping on. He could preserve. He worked on the wall without ceasing He toiled both night and day He fought with love and patience. He believed as did Isaiah. "They thai wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary ; and they shall walk, and not faint." So even though his way was dark, his load was heavy, friends few and ene mies many, he kept on keep ing on. As we go forth achieving and pursuing. let us be aware that perserverance is neces sary. Perseverance is our cross. And the way of cross leads home Just as there must be a labor pains before childbirth and Good Friday before Easter, so there must be perseverance before the gret coronation when the faithful will be crowned kings and queens With a constructive pro gram, faith in self, others and God, we march on with Christ as our example. We ask not for an easy way or light road We know that into each man's life some rain must fall, tomt days must be dark and dreary, but behind the dark est cloud there lies a silver lining, and God is that lining.
