GLADNESS and SADNESS....Last weekend was a time of opposite ended feeling for those Smithites that traveled from Charlotte to Rich mond for the football contest between our own Golden Bulls and the Panthers of Virginia Union. In the football game, the Bulls were really troubled, which accounted for the low feeling felt by the smith fans. However, Dr. Wendell Beam hosted an excit ing cookout for the fans from Charlotte and Washington, D.C. This culinary function came complete with all the trimmings, designed to add to an evening of fun. Washington Height Garden Club Meeting The Washington Height Gar den Club met on the eve of September 12 at the home of Maude Small to discuss' the delegates’ report from the 13 rd Annual Convention of the North Carolina Federat ion ✓of Garden Clubs which convened at the Burlington " Hilton Inn in Burlington, N.C., according to Lois Scott, Presi dent. Nancy English was chosen vice-president for the remain ing time of the Garden Club year. The club also discussed the plans of the local Council of Charlotte who will be having a flower show in October and is expecting each garden club to as i n_ er arrangement*. The flower show will be at Weat Charlotte Community Center on October 24. The Council will meet Sept. 13 at the Howard Johnson’s Mot or Lodge near Crabtree Valley Mall at 10:30 a.m. New members will receive their commissions at 1:20 p.m. The Council is composed of 41 members, 40 by the Gover nor plus a non-voting ex officio member appointed by the Chief Medical Director of the Veterans Administration. The Governor’s appointees include 16 at-large members and four members from each of the state's six Health Service Areas. The new at-large members include Dr. Jane G.
