For SO years the quartet has been a major influence on gospel music. Beginning in 1928 in Greenville, S.C., the Hummingbirds spent their early years in southern churches, where they develop ed their own style and gather ed a rich collection of songs from the Negro people - spirit uals, jubilees and folk music. The Hummingbirds are nat ionally known for their unique harmonic blends and tonal sounds. They have been a major influence on contempo rary soul music and their songs have often topped the gospel charts: The National Academy of ^ Television and Recording Art ists ranked the Hummingbirds as the Best Gospel Group in 1972. They are still flying high on the success of two best-sell ing albums, “Dixie Humming birds: Live" and “Golden Flight,” in honor of their 50 golden years. Young and old turn out in large numbers to hear their melodic sounds. James Davis, baritone and organizer of the quartet, has kept the group together over the years. Other Birds are Ira Tucker, lead singer; Howard Carroll, second baritone and guirtarist; and Beechy Thompson, tenor. Ebony magazine, which _featured the quartet in its October issue, called the Hum, mingbirds “a major Black institution, in their own way spreading an oral literature which contains some of the earliest notations of Black life in America.” Sunday’s gospel concert will also include the Soul Stirrers of Chicago, the Harmonizing Five of Van Wyck, S.C., and the Torrence Family of Moores ville Tickets are $3.50 in advance, $4.00 at the door.
