November 2. istr-thit ru λ οι rvrri Soul Train To Feature Tramps, Shalamar, Jean "Three from the world of disco" might be an apt title for this weekend's Soul Train show as it features the Trammps, Shalamar and Nor ma Jean, headliners on the disco scene. The five Trammps sing the title song from award-winning album "Where the Happy Peo ple Go" which earned them Billboard's "Disco Group of the Year" title and Nightfall Maeazinp's ai bum" award, and "Disco In ferno" which placed them in great demand in ballrooms and on television. In the same vein, S ha la mar offers "Toesing, Turning, and Swinging" and "Take It to the Bank." This youthful vocal dance trip-Jeffrey Daniels, Jody Watley and Gerald Brown-gained popularity with their first record, "Uptown Festival." "The Rainmaker" fe Little Theatre Play The Rainmaker, a play about believing and doubting, about love and magic, opens at The Little Theatre of Char lotte, Nov. 8 and runs thru Nov. 19, with one matinee at 2:30 on Sunday, Nov. 12. Starbuck, played by Jack Canon, has fashioned his name to reflect all that he hopes to be, while Lizzie, Kasey Klug, refuses to be re-christened "Melisande" be cause she insists on living in the real world, even if that real world is a drought strick en ranch where she lives with her father and two brothers «4» despair οf her ever find ing as husband. The cast, according to Artis tic Director, Gene Kusterer, is an interesting mix at seasoned pet formels and relative new comers to the stage. James Eric, also acting in the rale st «sputy Kite, has _ designed the set for "The Rainmaker", a play almost like a fairytale...both moving and funny. The play opens with the effort· sf ■ plsls girl's father, played by Ennis Atkins and two brothers, Steven Grimsley and Jimmy Ward to find her a husband. Lizzie is all the things a girl shouldn't be,..un coy, intelligent, blunt. • · SINGER BETTY WRIGHT —Owns highest scholastic honors Soulful Betty Wright Has Collected Numerous Honors ueit y W right by Sherieen McKoy Poet Staff Writer Betty Wright received her first Gold record on her eight eenth birthday for "Clean Up Woman" in 1972. She collected four "Cash Box" awards for the Best Single of the year, the Best New Female Vocalist, placed second in the Big Three Female R&B Artists of the Year, woo Top Three R&B Records of the year and was nominated for a Grammy Award in the "Best Rhythm and Bluea Female Vocal" cat -w*r. · In 1*75, "Railing Stone" called her "one of the most exciting vocalists in pop." In 1976, she won a Grammy as co-writer of "Where Is The Magazine" said hei performing" rivaled that of Otis Redding." And this year, "Cash Box" has labeled her new Alston-TK LP, "Betty Wright Live," "outstanding." Betty was born in Miami on December 21, 1953. She joined the family spiritual group. Echoes of Joy, when she was three-years-old, despite her four talented brothers and Sister Jeannette's complaints that she was too loud. Through her mother's encouragement, Betty played all the local talent shows in Miami during her school years. Later the group broke up and branched out on their own. Jeannette currently performs with the group Fire. Betty's break came when she wtffi a radio station givea way, a copy of Billy Stewart's "Summertime," and she was standing at the record store happily singing "Summer time," oblivious to a pair of pioduowi who were standing ther looking at one another in disbelief. She was on I ν elev en years old at the time a ad she thought her mother would go right through the roof when the oroducers told her they wanted to record Betty. Clarence Reid and Willie Clark convinced her mother though, and Betty was put in back-up singing time for their Deep City label and finally cut a song called "Paralyzed." It fared well on the regional charts and broke her on the Florida tour circuit, playing Smokey HA Β clubs between Miami and Jacksonville on weekends She was only thir teen but posed as an older person Betty holds the highest scho lastic record of Any black student yet to attend Miami Dade Junior College. She end ed her first semester with at 3.9 average out of a possible 4.0. She might have yet drifted away from show business and taien up pre-law not Clarence Reid, that autumn of 1971 as she enrolled at Miami-Dade Community College, given her a song called "Clean lip Wo man." WBTV To Provide Live Election Coverage WBTV News and CBS News will present live coverage of the 1978 Elections beginning at 7 p.m., and continuing to conclusion, Tuesday. Novem ber 7 on WBTV, Channel 3. From the WBTV studios, John Wilson and Janet Volz will anchor coverage of local elections including the L'.S Senate race in North Carolina, races in both the State House and State Senate, the County offices, the South Carolina guoernatoriai race, and the U.S. Senate race in South Carolina. WBTV News will have live remote units at both METS and at the Helms and Ingram Headquarters in Ral eigh. Local cut-ins will be scheduled for the last 7 min utes of each half hour In addition, WBTV News will present extended coverage from 8:53 til 9:30 p.m. and from 10:45 til 11:30 p.m. CBS News Correspondent Walter Cronkite will anchor the coverage from CBS News Election Night headquarters at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York. Joining ΚΠΠ in reporting the results by region of 35 Senate races, 36 guberna torial elections and all 435 House of Representative con tests will be Harry Reasoner (Eastι, Roger Mudd (South). Dan Rather (Midwest) and Lesley Stahl (WestI. r ormer CBS News National Correspondent Eric Sevareid. now a consultant to CBS News, will provide anaylsis of the returns from historical and social points of view through out the evening Second Friday Flicks Begin November 10 The Main Library announc es its fourth season of SECOND FRIDAY FLICKS This year's selection, featur ing films based on novels, includes two bonus movies. All showings are held in the second floor auditorium at 7:30 the second Friday of every month They are free and open to the public The series kicks off Friday, November 10 with KING'S ROW starring Ann Sheridan.
