SAY YOU SAW IT HERE.
What is most needed for learning is a humble
mind.
Now that Winston-Salem State and South
Carolina State have officially cinched the
football title in their respective conference, area
fans will have to wait and see if the two teams
will be paired in the annual Gold Bowl Football
Classic in Richmond, Va. on Saturday, Decem
ber 2.
They will also have to wait to see if either
Winston-Salem or S.C. State accepts a bid to
another post-season bowl.
Winston-Salem is hopeful of receiving a bid to
the NCAA Division 11 Playoffs. The unbeaten
Rams, one of the few remaining teams with
€)lemished records, rest atop the division
ndings this week and are most deserving of
the honor.
Participating in the NCAA Division 11 Playoffs
would indeed be a great honor for coach Billy
Hayes and his undefeated Rams. But, isn’t it
about time black people develop the sophistica
tion that would enable them to appreciate
something of their own?
The Gold Bowl, matching Winston-Salem and
S.C. State would have great appeal to the general
public in the vast area covered by both
conferences. Certainly, the people of the electro
nic media would jump for an opportunity to
televise such an attraction and it would appear
that this time around the Gold Bowl would
attract more than 20,000 spectators.

An appearance by

Bowl. AndTif S.C. State should choose to turn its
attention elsewhere, the GB would be lowered to
. gnmpthing slightly more than a mere football
exhibition between two also rans.>
This should’t happen to a conference that has
made such tremendous strides in recent times.
Did you know that Bob Lanier has moved into
the 35th position on the all-time NBA scoring
list? With 13,649 points through games of October
29, Lanier is seventh among active players
trailing Kareem Adbul-Jabber, Elvin Hayes,
Gail Goodrich, Lou Hudson, Rick Barry, Walt
Frazier, and Pete Maravich.

A&T’s highly rated basketball team, which
played its first intra-squad contest in Lynchburg,
Va. last Saturday, has scheduled another pre
season contest for November 17 in their new
, facility on the Greensboro campus.
Some people are inclined to quit looking for
work the moment they find a job.
A strong performance by Ted Brown in
University Park, Pa. Saturday would determine
if the flashy North Carolina State senior is going
to be a serious contender for the Heisman’s
Trophy. Ted, who ran for a school record 251
yards on 37 carriers against Penn. State a year
ago, needs another exceptional day to capture
coveted honor.
Would you agree that Virginia Union has
become one of the great disappointments of the
current football campaign? Coach Willard Bail
ey opened the season with an outstanding squad
that was rated with the best in the league.
According to a CIAA release, the football
contest between Johnson C. Smith and N.C.
Central, that was originally scheduled for
November 4 and was changed to the 25 of
November, has been cancelled
winston-saiem, as expected, leads the confer
ence in scoring with 290 points.
According to Phil Busher, sports information
director at J.C. Smith, the Pittsburg Steelers are
interested in Grover Covington, the «’2",
225-pound senior who leads the team in individ
ual tackles with 83 solos in eight games.
Has the Hartley-Woods Gymnasium on the
J.C. Smith campus been renamed? Recent
releases from the westside campus list the
facilities as the “Jack S. Brayboy Gymnasium.”

Fayetteville State’s Broncos
Fayetteville State visits

p.m. Saturday to try to avenge
last year's 13-12 defeat by
Johnson C. Smith University.
The Broncos are rolling after
a slow start this year to win
five games and tie once in
their last seven outings.
Fayetteville State ranks
third in team scoring offense
(20.9 per game) in the CIAA
while holding the third spot in
team rushing defense allowing
109.7 yards per game. The
Broncos are a balanced team.
Coach Ray McDougal was
forced to go with a new
backfield due to injuries the
past two weeks, but he surfac
ed with an upset over Eliza

over Bowie State. Freshman

If they win, they will both

New York Man, Says GO
How do you spot a Wall
Street man?
By his clothes, says Gentle
men’s Quarterly's November
issue. Wall Street types dress
to remain anonymous-in
suits, of course, completely
impersonal, and never quite
in style, according to GQ.
In fact, you can pin down a
New York man’s profession or
neighborhood just by his
clothes, says GQ, and proves it
in “That New York Style.”
For instance, while the Mad
ison Avenue ad man is no
longer stereotyped by a shark
skin suit, he does dress to say,
“I’m an ’up' person wearing
up’ clothes on an ‘up’ day,"
writes GQ. This means a
colorful, clean, somewhat san
itized appearance just this
side of avant-garde called the
“height of inoffensiveness.’’
