Lions, Cougars Keep Playoffs Hopes Alive by Chase Vance Post Sports Writer The West Charlotte Lions and the Charlotte Catholic Cougars are the only two Charlotte schools left In the pursuit of a state champion ship. The Lions entertain the East Burke Cavaliers of Morgan ton, N.C. in a game Friday at 8 p.m. in Memorial Stadium. West Charlotte scored earl ier on a 41 yard romp by Henderson Threatt to get by Ashbrook in the first round. Ashbrook defeated East Burke earlier in the season by a 7-6 score. The Cavaliers, now 9 and 2, feature tight end Jerry Baker and quarterback Scott Martin on offense and Dave Sain and Eddie Mull on defense as linebackers. The winner will play the winner of the Greensboro Grimsley-W inston-Salem Rey nolds game on the road on November 24 for the Western Regional championship. The Cougars will play the West Montgomery Warriors in Mt. Gilead at 8 p.m. Friday. The Warriors are averaging 37 poirils per game and giving up 6. At 6-5, DeWalt leads the first team that includes Scot Will iams of. North afki Darryl Broome of West Charlotte and forward Ricky Stevenson of Olympic and Ted Dunn of Myers Park are the guards. Smith University basketball team in their quest for another trip to the CIAA champion ships in Hampton, Va. in February. Kilgore and 6-4 Thomas "Fly" Williams are the Bulls that will be called upon to check the opponent offensive strength according to new basketball Cqach. Robert Moore, who takes Jerome Fitch's place. "Freshmen will be called upon immediately to help us out," saia wioore. "We don t have that many returning starters coming back and we have a lot of inexperience."
