Can a TV station with no
black or women at decision
making levels adequately re
- present the Charlotte commu
nity?
A coalition of equal rights
organization says no, and thus
is calling on the Federal Com
munication Commission to
revoke the license of Channel
36 ( WRET-TV). The Charlotte
Broadcast Coalition maintains
that Ch. 36 has grossly violat
ed FCC regulations in hiring
practices and is not represent
ing the needs of the black
community.
The coalition says the stat
ion does not have enough
black employees in top-level
jobs where program decisions
are made. From 1971 until last
July, WRET had no blacks in
the top jobs of managers,
Officials and sales. In Julyr
when Ch. 36 became the local
NBC affiliate, two blacks were
hired for top-level jobs.
According to the Federal
Communications Act, airway

ions must renew their licenses
every three years by showing
they have served the needs of
the community they service.
All Charlotte radio and TV
stations arc up for license
renewal on December 1.
According to FCC regulations,
they must show that a certain
percentage οf management
personnel are blacks and wo
men. Because top manage
ment determines what pro
grams and news are covered,
it is here that discrimination is
being attacked.
In the local service area of
Mecklenburg, Gaston arid
Union counties, the regulation
states that 5 percent of top
level Jobs must be filled by
blacks over the past 3 years
for the station to get renewal.
In overall employment, 9.S
percent must be black. Prior
to the July hiring», WRET
showed 3.5 percent to 4.6
percent black employees over
the last 2 years.
However, the coalition feels
even these federal guidelines
are too low.
"Charlotte has a 30 percent
black population," said coa
lition chairman Rev. James
Barnett. "Our goal is that all
stations should have a person·

General Manager of Ch. 36,

said. "We have more than

Area Churches Announce Thanksgiving Worship Services
by Sherleen McKoy
Post Staff Writer
The Thanksgiving season
has prevailed upon us once
again and it is one which is
most welcomed for it is a time
of giving special thanks to
God, feasting and enjoying
our family and friends It is a
time of rejoicing in God s
goodness, His love and
His mercy; a time of relaxat
ion away from the rush and
pressures of everyday living,
and a time to remember and
encourage those who are less
fortunate than we are bv
sharing our blessings with
them.
When we think of Thanks
giving, festive activities
immediately come to our
minds; parades, turkey and
ham with all the dressings,
and lots of fruits, cakes and
pies, as well as some other
things we enjoy seeing and
doing.
Some churches and congre
gations will observe Pre
Tlianksgiving morning and
evening worship services.
Others will thank God in then
own way. It does not matter so
long as God receives the glory
for his handiworks.
Some local ministers shared
their feelings on what Thanks
giving meant to them.
Rev George E. Battle, mini
ster of Greater Gethsemane
AMB Zion Church.'stated. "To
me, Thanksgiving is a period
of reflection and thanking God
for all He's been to me. I thank
Him for the people of Char
lotte and for the opportunity to
r.erve Him." Continuing, he
said, "It is a time to count
your blessin'gs and not your
frustrations and disappoint
ments. I thank God for my
family."
ι υ riev. i^emar r osier, past
or of Second Calvary Baptist
Church. Thanksgiving
"beyond the usual things, bas
ically means sharing. The
Bible states that one may
plant and one ma> water," he
said, "But God gives the
increase." In this light, he
feels that "every person
should pray that God would
make him a channel of bless
ings to others. Thanksgiving
means more than verbally
thanking God "
"Thanksgiving is a time of
showing one's gratitude
towards riot only material
gains through God. but grati
tude for friends and others not
involved in our lives daily, but
who have an influence on us,"
stated Rev. William Lee.

"Thanksgiving means that I
should show my appreciation
and thanks to God by giving

St. Paul Baptist Church leels
that Thanksgiving is a time of

that we should be "especially
