(Post photo by James Peeler) Special Project Teaches Sharing To Young Children by Susan Ellsworth Post Staff Writer Seven young children had an opportunity to learn about sharing during a special pro ject for the Charlotte "Butter flies," (children aged 2-5), of the Jack and Jills of America When the youngsters, accompanied by their mothers met at the home of co-chair man Mrs. Patricia Dowdy on Tues., Nov. 21, they brought with them plenty of non-per ishable foods to help fill a Thanksgiving Food basket for a family in need' in their community. Highlighting the evening, Mrs. Dowdy related a brief story of "The First Thanksgiv ing" along with an explanat ion of Thanksgiving customs to the children who were costumed in Indian headdress. TUnAJ»Koirû^ both Mrs. Dowdy and Mrs. Thelma Wallon, helped re mind the children · of · the importance of sharing at Thanksgiving and all-year round. Each month, the "Butter flies" participate in a planned activity, such as their Novem ber community service pro ject. Accepted for national mem bership in 1957, the Charlotte branch of the Jack and Jills of America oners activities ior boys and girls of all age groups—the youngest being the "Butterflies." The main function of this organization is "to aid in the development of the fully inte grated child physically, soc ially, religiously, education ally, emotionally and through recreation; to aid mothers in learning more about their children through careful study; to help children less fortunate than our own; and to support all national legislation aimed at improving conditions for all children." The Jack and Jills of Char lotte will celebrate "Christ mas Around the World" on Dec. 8. Members of each branch will prepare foods from individual countries for a seasonal feast. Cramerton To Get New Center For Older Adults RALEIGH--Governor Jim Hunt announced that a center for older adults will now be a reality for the town of Cramer ton. Federal funds in the amount of $60,000 have been allotted under Title V of the Older Americans Act, through the N.C. Division of Aging, for renovation of a building to be used as a focal point for activities and programs to «erve the 22,000 older citizens of Gaston County This was matched by $46,183 in local funds. The town of Cramerton^will pay for the operation of the building. The activities and programs will be a coopera tive effort by agencies such as the Gaston County Office on Aging, Department of Social Services, church groups and other non-profit organizations. There will be arts and crafts, quitting, eSaçremt;, ""painting and" embroidery"; Free Bus Service To Food Stamp Office There will be free bus ser vice from the Civic Center to the Social Services Center and the Food Stamp Office for the duration of the bus strike. The bus will be provided by WBT, and it will leave the Civic Center at 9:15 a.m. and at 12:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Round trip service will be provided. The Social services Center is located a 301 Billingsley Road and th< Food Stamp Office at 95] South—Independence Boule vard. Smith University who have been selected as being among the country's outstanding campus leaders. Campus nominating com mittees and editors of the annual directory have includ ed the namfe of these students based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and future potential. Honorees from Johnson C. Smith University are Doreen Bowen, Charlene Evans, Gil bert Harper, Wilbert Harper, Hedy Johnson. Cynthia Ann McDaniel, Ulysses Nesmith, Bevery A. Walker and Nathan Walker. Smith Uni versity students join an elite group of students selected from more than 1,000 institu fNew Woman s Qub Aids Needy Family A new Black Woman's social club has made its debut in Charlotte, "THE FRA ZETTA SOCIAL CLUB" with its first community project, providing food to the family of Mrs. Annie Davis of 193 Pied mont Court for Thanksgiving. The club presently boasts a proud membership of 10 young women. They are: Vanessa Barnes, Dianne Boyd, Patri cia Hoard, La Verne Graham, Carolyn Mcllwain, Jean Mc Lean, Brenda McMoore, Çadel Nelson, Ruth Perry and Elizabeth Thomas. These women have vowed to devote their lime and efforts f.o the underprivileged, handicapp ed, senior citizens and any other groups that can benefit from their services. The objective jfi the Fra ~ zetta Social Club is to take part in community activities that can provide a sense of worth, and a feeling of "— accomplishment, knowing that they have helped to better the total community as a whole. The Frazetta Social Club has made many plan· for the future. One project, which is very special to each member, ts the-Christmas-luncheon-ion.
