In Charlotte Marathon Textile Worker To Run For Equal Rights Group by Eileen Hanson Special To The Post Textile Worker to run Mara thon for Equal Rights Group Twenty-six miles is a short ride, but it's a long way to run For Kenneth Rose, the chall enge is part of everyday life. A textile worker at Meiwa U.S.A., Rose will compete in the Charlotte Marathon on Sat., Dec. 16, joining some 2.000 other runners in a 26 mile race through the streets of Charlotte. At age 35, Rose needs to finish the course in less than 3 hours 15 minutes to qualify for the famous Boston Marathon in April. Rose looks on the challenge as more than another race. "I want to encourage other blacks to run. Right now there are very few black marathon runners in Charlotte," said Rose. He would like to start a Martin Luther King, Jr . Mara thon some day. He is also running to raise money for the Charlotte Equal Rights Council, a local um brella organization concerned with equality and economic justice for minorities women and all working people. Sup Skip Shipman ...Returns home — Sheldon Shipman Joins Blue Bears Coaching Staff ■ SALISBURY-Livingstone College head basketball coach Fred Thomas has announced the appointment of Sheldon "Skip" Shipman as his full time assistant Coach. Shipman, a standout perfor mer at Salisbury High School, started at point guard on the 71-72 WNCHAA Champion and helped direct them to the title. He then earned a full-scholar ship to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. A scrappy, tough defender, His quickness and poise on offense, earned him the desig nation as a key sixth starter and "Super Sub" for his num erous outstanding performan ces coming off the bench that helped Charlotte rise to natio nal prominence under coaches Bill Foster and Lee Rose. iMiipman earned nis nacne lor of Arts in Political Science and Religious studies in May 1976. He worked in the promo tions department and as an analyst-consultant-announcer for WBTV in Charlotte before enrolling in the Hood Theolo gical Seminary where he is pursuing his masters degree in Theology. Skip is married to the former Ann Tyson of Char lotte and resides at 924 West Monroe Street. If you get up early on Saturday morning you'll find him running up 1-77 to La Salle Street, and then back down Statesville Ave. and through town for a 26-mile course. Each time he gets a little closer to his 3-hour goal. "Running is a way of life for me," said Rose. "It's an outlet for every pressure that comes up at home and on the job." Last year Rose ran his first marathon in S hours. His second was in Columbia, S.C. which he finished in 4 hours. A a union toadf r-Rose also deeply involved in Local 1781 of the Amalgamated Clothing and textile Workers Union (ACTWU). He is a recording secretary of the local, and chairman of the shop committee and chief steward at Meiwa. He recent ly led the negotiations for a successful new contract with the Japanese-owned firm. "It took a one-day strike, but with 100 percent of the employees outside the plant, the company didn't take long to settle it." said Rose. - He also finds time for family and church activities. His wife, Erbie, a clerk at United Parcel Service, and 4 children -Sharon, Lavonia, Kimhprly and Kenneth--will be out cheering for him on Dec 16. Mrs. Rose occasionally runs with her husband around the track, but not in the races. "He runs because he likes it," she said. The family bleongs to Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church, where Rose sings in the choir. * When asked what advice he would give newrunners, Rose cautioned them to stay relax ed and start at a slow pace. "You have to build up to it. Do stretching exercises before and after running don't go tnn fast, and don't be tight," said Rose. "As for myself, I'm still very young at it."
