First United Presbyterian Church is one of the most influential black Presybterian churches in America, accord ing to Stroud. Formed in 1968. the church was the result of a merger between Brooklyn and 7th Street Presbyterian churches. The Brooklyn area, which Stroud called the heart of black Charlotte, was labeled as a disadvantaged area and consequently earmarked for a redevelopment program. The merger led to a combin ing or membership and resou rces expansion and develop ment. Research for the project has been done in many areas including historical data of the foundings of both churches, building design of First United Presbyterian, taped inter views with people having knowledge of the church's history, youth programs, old ·' members of both churches, and pastors and moderators.
