PRESIDENT VERTA WITHERSPOON WITH ...▲^an Rousseau and Fred Alexander RMMC 650 Eastern Stars Honor Fred Alexander by Susan Ellsworth Poet Staff Writer The Rosa M. Morris Chapter No. 650, Order of the Eastern Star, honored Senator Fred Alexander at the chapter's annual Christmas Dinner held on Dec. 2 at the Econo Lodge. Presenting a check to Alan Rousseau, president of the local NAACP for a life mem bership, was a highlight of the gala evening for the three year old Estera Star Chapter. Senator Fred Alexander was honored for his participat ion in establishing the Char lotte NAACP chapter in 1975 and securing a charter for its membership in the national organization. Guests at the dinner were treated to music, dinner, soc ializing and exchanging gifts. The Order of the Eastern Star is an organization, which promotes fraternalism and conducts community service actjfctiee. —: \ Among th^ year's accom plishments, the group gave a donation to Mrs. Carrie Graves for litigation involving the Housing Authority, a Thanksgiving basket to an indigent family, playing bingo with patients at Community Hospitals, donating to the Anita Stroud Foundation, and securing a NAACP Life Mem bership certificate. Members are planning a CaribbeanN^ruise for July .1879. The following people are members of Rosa M. Scott Allen, Resident Bishop of the Char lotte Area and the Western North Carolina Conference of The United Methodist Church, Dr. Wilson Weldon, Superin tendent of the Charlotte Dist ricts of The United Methodist Church and the Rev. John F. Eppe, Minister of the St. Mark's United Methodist Church. Bishop L. Scott Allen will deliver the Consecration Ser mon. Bishop Allen received his formal education from Clark College and Gammon Theological Seminary of At lanta, Georgia, and from Northwestern University. He has received honorary degrees from the following colleges and universities: Bethume-Cookman College, Emory and Henry College, Wiley College and Duke Uni versity. He has held pasto rates in the states of Georgia and Louisiana. He has served as instructor of Philosophy and Religion at Clark College, and as Editor of the Central Christian Advocate, a connec tional newspaper. In 1967, Bishop Allen was elected and consecrated a Bishop of The Methodist Church, and assigned to serve -in the Central Alabama, Flor ida, Mississippi and the Upper Mississippi Annual Conferen ces. From 1968 to 1976, he was Bishop over the Holston Area (Holston Annual Conference). And in 1976, he was assigned to — serve as Bishop over the Charlotte Area (Western North Carolina Annual Confe rence). Bishop Allen is also active on the National Church levels and holds numerous offices Among the many are the following: President of the Commission on Religion and Race, member of the Execu tive Committee of the General Board of Publication of The United Methodist Church, President of The World Divi sion, Board of Global Minis tries, President of the College of Bishops of the Southeastern Jurisdiction, Chairman of the Board of Gammon Theologi cal Seminary, and member of the Board of the Interdeno minational Theological Center. Bishop Allen holds member ship on the following connect ional college boards: Bennett' College, Brevard College, Greensboro College, High Point College, and Pfeiffer College. In addition to Bishop Allen's busy life as a churchman, he also finds time for civic organ izations such as the National Association for the Advance ment of Colored People. The Bishop is married to the former. Miss Sarah Adams and they are presently residing in the city of Char lotte. Holiday shoppers in the United States will be able to choose from over 150,000 diffe rent kinds of toys for sale in an estimated one million retail stores, say agricultural exten sion specialists at NCSU. Despite the efforts of gov ernment agencies and respon sible toy manufacturers and retailers, many of these toys are dangerous to children. Because of this, it's espec ially important that parents, relatives and older sisters and brothers check every new toy they buy and every old toy around the house for ha7ards The Consumer Product Safety Commission makes the following suggestions for buy ing safe toys: Buy toys that suit the skills and abilities of the child. South America? People who were attracted by off-brand leaders, accord ing to Bishop A G. Dunston of the A M E. Zion Church in New Bern, N.C., "had become frazzled and puzzled by the vicissitudes of life and had been lulled, at an unguarded moment in a state of misguid ed decision." His remarks were made during a television interview given over the Thanksgiving season. After having visited Guyana in March, Dr. Harold Cle ment, secretary-treasurer of the Department of Overseas Missions said that some of Jones' supporters told him they had become disenchant ed with the philosophy of orthodox Christianity and had turned to Jones for relief In reference to the Guyana incident, Bishop Dunston said it would give his denomination —tA.M.E.
