Church News Briefs First United Presbyterian Church Opens Its Archives Sunday, December 31 Κυ Cl» AL Poet Staff Writer k The History-Archives Com mittee of the First United Presbyterian Church will open its archives for public viewing on Sunday, Dec. 31, in the Fellowship Hall at 4:00 p.m Taped interviews and a devotional service will pre cede the opening of the arch ives at 3 p.m. First United Presbyterian Church is one of the earliest black Presbyterian churches in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area The taped conversations will pertain to the history of the Brooklyn and Seventh Street churches whicn merged in 1968 into First United Pres byterian Church. Older members of both churches and people who knew original members will be speaking. They include: Charles Rhyne, Ruth Kennedy, Thomas Wyche, Louise Young Harris, Estelle Liston, Vernon Grigg Sr., Annie Maxwell, Minnie Max well Richard, Airy Max well Clark, Lucy Maxwell, Dr J.W. Smith Sr., Addison Yongue Sr., Catherine Haw kins, Helen Holsey, Amie Maxwell and Annette Max well Payne. _ · Over 1,000 items will be on display in the 32 categories of the exhibit. Documents and prepared papers from First United Presbyterian will be concern ed with the founders and charter members, consultants for the researched history of J.C.S.U. (Inez Parker Arch ives). The Archives will be open Jan. 1-14 on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Sundays, Jan. 7 and 14 from 12:15 to 4 μ.ni. The concert will be under the direction of Constance Hill along with Jerod Greene, or ganist of First Baptist Church, as guest organist. The choir will sing "O Come All Ye Faithful" in the candle light processional. After the invocation by Rev. George Ε. Battle, pastor of Gethsemane, the following selections will be sung: "Angels From The Realms of Glory" by Mont gomery, choir; "I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" by Longfellow, solo by Eddie Byers; "Negro Bell Carol" by James, choir; "Gloria In Ex celsis Deo" by Duncan, solo ists Eddie Byers and George Allen; "Roun' de Glory Man ger" by James, "Ava Maria" by Schubert, solo, Mrs. Rachel Byers-soprano; "O Come, Ο Come Emmanuel" by Neale, solo, Mrs. Thelma Ladd-sop rano; "Gesu Bambino" by itone. Following the aforement ioned selections. Rev. Battle will give a brief meditation on "The Nativity." Jhe choir will then sing excerjks from the "Christmas Messiah" by Han del. Tenor Alexander Byers will sing "Comfort Ye My People;" "And The Glory of the Lord" will be sung by the choir; "He Shall Feed His Flock," Mrs. Lorraine Thor ton-soprano; "Come Unto Him," Mrs. Sarah Hafer soprano; and "Hallelujah," the choir. — kin will conclude the concert.
