Dr Bertha Maxwell Workshop coordinator Black Women’s Workshop To Attack Racism Black women in America face two barriers: racism and sexism. Changing this situa tion will be th<» theme of a spetcal Workshop on Sat. Feb 10 at the Holiday Inn, 3815 N. Tryon. Called •'WEETAP” - Women's Educational Equity Training and Assessment Pro ject” - the workshop will focus on awareness understanding and skill development of black women for positive social change. A recent Carnegie Corpora,' tion study showed that “Occu pational segregation by sex was exactly as great today as it was at the turn of the Century, if not worse.” According to workshop coor dinator Dr. Bertha Max^efl , “The workshop is aimed at f promoting black women’s i awareness ot recent equity j and sex discrimination legis- I lation and also to help ■ ' develop skills and understand ing to attack racism and sex is ‘ 1 our communities." i workshop is sponsored | by the Charlotte Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority which received a grant from the Office of Edu cation. This is one of 7 regional workshops being held around the country. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by opening re marks from Dr,. Delores Thomas, WEETAP director in Washington, D.C. Dr. Maxwell will present a multi-media show, "The Building of Insti tutional Racism." ; Then participants will join t awareness training sessions led by local community leaders: + Black Women and Aging 1 (Anita Stroud, Rev .J.W. Smith, Grace Wiley,Fammie Hargraves). -(-Education (Elizabeth Randolph, Catherine Crosby, Betty MacLaurin, Valairia * Granger, David Hunter. Harry Hogan). -(-Black Women and the Media (Mary Hopper, Clara Lowry, Vanessa Gallman, Jean Bohn). -(-Politics: State and Local (Sara Stevenson, Phyllis Lynch, Louise Brennan). -4-Health Care (Idealia Proctor, Julia Prince, Dr. Spencer Durate, Khadijah Abdullah). + Housing: Private and Public (Jerry Springs, Carrie Graves, Willie Hart, Arthur Griffin). -i- IT m nlovmonl f CoHio Smith Jordan, Monique Shufford). Luncheon panelists will be attorney Julius Chambers and Harris Williams of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. In the afternoon training and power strategies sessions will be held focusing on deve loping action plans. "We're hoping participants will go back to their groups and set up some programs,” said Maxwell. "Many women are tired of the same old stuff. They’re no longer going to participate in the go fix the coffee, girl' mentality.” Registration is $1 (free for senior citizens) and $5.50 for luncheon (optional).
