Millions more may die, and many victims are not aware they have thei disease, ac cording to statistics compiled by the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. Affecting more than ten million Americans, diabetes is increasing at a rate of 6 percent annually, disclosed researched reports. a metobolic disorder, diabetes inhibits the body's ability to use insulin, which is needed to convert car bohydrates into energy. } An individual bom today, living an average of 70 years has more than a one in five chance of contracting the disease, reports concluded. Half of those victims die from kidney disease (a complication caused by the disease) within 25 years after diabetes has been diagnosed. Symptoms, according to reports, can include increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss despite increased appetite, ichy skin, cranky and irritable behavior, tired, drowsy or weakness often, blurry-eyed and slow healing of cuts or bruises. “You don’t have to be aware of all these symptoms to have diabetes, Mrs. Uzzell ex plained. “You just need to be suspicious enough to have some symptoms checked." The only known treatment for diabetes at this time, according o the Foundation, is a combination of insulin theraDV. diet and exercise. Clinton Chapel Has Served Area For Six Generations By Susan Ellsworth Post Staff Writer For six generations, black people have come together to worship at the Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church Founded in 1864. the 115 year old Clinton Chapel is the oldest black church in Charlotte This Methodist church was first located in the Mint Street area on land donated by Mrs Annie North Various religious denominations had roots in the Clinton Chapel Named after Bishop J J Clinton, the church was organized by Rev E H Hill who served as its first pastor. During the Civil War the Clinton Chapel was considered "a major place of worship for all black people in Charlotte." according to Rev Morgan Tann. the church's present pastor The Clinton Chapel moved lo another location on South Mint Street under the direc tion of Rev K. Melvin Taylor after Duke Power Company purchased the land the church was then located on in the 1950s. Rev Taylor supervised the lurch's second relocation in 966 to its present home on ^ozzells Ferry Road.
