TELLING IT LIKE IT REALLY IS.
Did you know that Jesse Clement has been
named head basketball coach at North Carolina
Central? A graduate of St. Augustine’s College
where he served as head football and basketball
coach for a number of years, Clement has
worked with the NCCU football team as an
assistant coach for the past several years. He’s
one of the most highly-respected gentlemen in
^coaching circle.
John Harris, who is tough to beat on the golf
course, shot a four-under-par 32 at Revolution
Park Golf Course here Monday morning. In
doing so, he whipped the pants off J. D. Grier and
James Black, two of the better golfers around.
John Love, the co-chairman of the popular Par
ousters organization wmcn sponsored me four
ball tournament at Sunset Hills last weekend,
says that 144 players or 72 teams participated in
the annual event. Love informed that six of the
teams were composed of brothers. Not, “black
people,” silly boy.He meant they’re “blood
relatives.” .... Or did he?
With the 10 teams in the Jackie Robinson
Semi-Pro Baseball League counting down to the
season opener here a week from Saturday, the
word is leaking out that Ulysses “Rabbit”
Withers may have the team to beat this summer.
It seems that “Rabbit” has been putting
together a squad of aging veterans and aggres
sive youngsters who are blending to make the
Hoskins Giants a potent force to deal with.
Phil Busher, the young guy who beats the
drums for Johnson C. Smith sports, predicts the
Golden Bulls will do well in Saturday’s track and
field championships. According to Busher,
coach Kenny Powell will have “depth in all of the
running departments with no real weakness in
any race.”
Busher says Ronald Bell and James Hardy
should be “threats in the 880 yard run.” He
continued, “Both runners have posted a 1:56
indoor half mile. That time should be cut by
several seconds outdoors.”
Wonder why the CIAA officials did not select a
Johnson C. Smith basketball player to attend the
Senegalese Basketball Federation’s Invitation to
the ' first 'Pan-/£iriean Basketball Classic in
Dakar, Senegal, West Africa, beginning Satur
m day. The CIAA Cagers, coached by Dave Robins
r of Virginia Union, will also play the Ivory Coast,
Guinea and several other African teams during
the tour.
Has Johnson C. Smith quietly scheduled a
football contest for the Bahamas? Word is out
that the Golden Bulls will fill the date they had
with Shaw University with a contest on the
Islands. Shaw has dropped football from its
sports program.
Hampton Institute has added Liberty Baptist
and New York Tech to its 1979 football schedule.
The Pirates will host the Golden Bulls in
Hampton, Va. September 22.
Mike Ballweg, sports information director at
Hampton, calls her “fabulous Gwen Jordan” for
nvnnllftnt A ^-1
aWMWVUM. MM MMM^yMMMJ WU «VU II VOlUliaiJ,
Gwen was recently honored as AU-Virginia
AIAW and third team National Association of
Women’s Sports. She shot 17.2 points per game
while leading the Lady Pirates in field goal
percentage, free throw accuracy and assists this
past season.
Remember Walter Funderburk, the former
All-State standout at quarterback for the Second
Ward Tigers? He’s currently serving as the
co-center director at Sprague Street Recreation
Center for the city of Winston-Salem.
Jerry Jones of Winston-Salem is making final
plans for the 16th annual Spring Festival Golf
Tournament to be held at the Winston Lake Golf
Course April 28 and 29. The tourney will consist
of five flights, with valuable prizes up for grabs
for the first three winners in each flight. Entry
fee will be $25 for club members and $35 for
non-members. To enter, contact Jones at (919)
727-2703.
Would you believe the asking price for Earvin
“Magic” Johnson and Larry “The Bird” Bird is
said to be somewhere near $7 million? One
source reports that the $7 million figure is only
speculation and that the price could go even
Hhigher.
Miller High Life and Miller Life Distributors
have announced a series of regional amateur
golf tournaments they will sponsor around the
state this summer.

With 11-Under-Par 133

To Par Buster Golf Title
The golf twosome of Hay
wood Stevenson and Donald
Littlejohn birdied the first
three holes at Sunset Hills Golf
Course Saturday afternoon
and wound up with a six
under-par 30 on the front side
to take a commanding lead for
championship honors in the
annual Par Busters Four Ball
Golf Tournament here last
weekend.
This feared pair finished the
day with a 0-under-par 63 and
was nevei headed as they
walked away with their sec
ond straight and their third
title in the past four years in
this popular event. They
finished the tournament with a
spectacular 133 and were 11
under par for the 36-hold
tourney.
Robert Brown and Milton
Murray finished a distant
second while Reggie Sellers
and Phil Neeley were coming'
in third and Ray Crowder and
Jason Doster were finishing
fourth.
First FlipM honors went to
.9*
Alonzo Pettis and Ed Mitchell,
who followed a non-too
impressive 75 on Saturday
with a five-under-par 67 on
Sunday to wind up two under
at 142. Richard Reid and
Frank Liston wound up in
second place with 145 and
Jack Lawson and J. Will
Bolden captured third, James
Bouler and A1 Frazier were
fourth and Herman King and
Robert Stradford fifth.
An interesting fight was
waged for top honors in the -
second flight where Lonell
White and James Ingram
came in ahead of the field with
a 147. Willie Pruitt and
William Gill were a close
second at 149 and Sam Garrett
and Andrew Jackson had to go
one extra hole before wrest
ling third place away from
Wayne Carr and C. L. Chan
celler, who finished fourth.
One point separated the first
and second place finishers in
the Third Flight. James Davis
and Jesse Davis bagged the ,
title with a 74 on Sunday while
John Love and Roosevelt Swift
were going three over at 75.
Both teams shot 78 on Satur
day. David Pauling and Tic
Rudisell were a shot back at
154. They claimed third place
honors.
George Young and William
Hoey encountered very little
difficulty in picking up the
Fourth Flight crown. After
shooting an 80 on Saturday,
this pair improved to a one
over 73 Sunday afternoon to
win the title by six strokes.
Gerald Bridges and Michael
Hughes were third and Mack
Adams and Willie Dunlap
fourth.
Fifth Flight honors went to
Robert Moore and James
Jones, who took the title by
one stroke over Frankie Hilton
and George Crawford. Both
groups shot 85’s in the opening
round, but Moore and Jones
posted a four-over 76 Sunday
afternoon while Hilton. anc
Crawford were carding a 77.
