Winston-Salem . State To Hear Vernon Jordan WINSTON-SALEM-Vemon Jordan, National Urban League President, will deliver the Commencement address for the 87th graduation exer cise of Winston-Salem State University at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 20 in the Winston-Salem Memorial Coliseum. Close to 370 graduates are expected to march in the ceremony, according to WSSlTs regis trars office. During the ceremonies, honorary doctorates will be awarded to Jordan and Dr. Selma H. Burke, educator and i artist. Dr. Burke has had a distinguished career in the field of the visual arts, both as a sculptor and a teacher. Her works have been exhibited widely in museums and gal leries in the United States and Europe. She is best known, perhapa, for her profile of Franklin D. Roosevelt which i appears on the dime. Mrs. Amanda Pemberton, a County Office Will Observe Independence Day Mecklenburg County offices will be dosed Monday, May 21, in observance of Mecklen burg Independence Day, and Monday, May 28, In obser vance of Memorial Day. This includes ell units of the Health Department, the Food SUmp Office, the Tax Offices, and the Register of Deeds Office. Day care centers operated by the Department of Social Services will remain open, but all other units of the department will be dosed for the two holidays. All branches of the Pabllc Library will be dosed on both Mondays, and tba Main Library, 110 North Tryon Street, will also does Sunday, Mhy.1T, and will to dose on Sundays for the rest of the spring end summer. The Board of County Com missioners, which normally meets the third Monday morn ing of the month, will not dUet •k - •'-.I. Monday, May 21, but will meet, instead, at 9a.m., Tues day, May 22. The new County Health Department Building at 249 Billingsley Road, is scheduled to open for the first time Tuesday, May 22, at 8 a.m. The Health Department build ing at 1200 Blythe Boulevard closed Friday, May 11 (except the Vital Statistics Division, which remains open through Wednesday, May 18) and all necessary services are being provided the week of May 14 < 18 at the Health Department building at 2848 Beatties Ford Road. The two County landfills, Harrisburg Park and Hol brooks Road, will be open both Mondays, on. a normal sche dule, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Holbrooks Road and 7:90 a.m. -to 4 p.m. at Harrisburg Park. member of the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Rockingham, N.C. was presented a plaque by Mrs. Laura Ervin, chairman of the State Achievements and Awards Committee. Mrs. Sarah Hamilton of the Alpha Lambda Chapter of Rockingham spoke at the morning session. At the afternoon session Mrs. Nancy Garvin, state vice president presided. The winner of the Torch liters Contest was Darryl Ervin, tha son of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Ervin of Charlotte. He will represent tha N.C. State Council at tha «""<««i Talent-O-Rama contest to ha held in November during tha South Eastern Regional Meet Lug at New OrieamTu.
