William Blakeney ...Coulwood principal Blakeney Elected President Of District Principals 1 by Susan Ellsworth Post Staff Writer > William Blakeney was elect- 1 ed president of District 6 for the ! 1979-81 years by the North Carolina Principals and Assis tant Principals Association. District 6 consists of all the schools in Charlotte-Mecklen burg. Blakeney has been principal of Coulwood Junior High School for four years. On awards day, this part school term, the school's ye*.1 staff dedicated the 1979 school annual to him. He was recently re-elected for a second two-year term, 1979-81, as National President of South Carolina State Col- 1 lege National Alumni Associa tion, Inc. The Charlotte chapter of South Carolina State College National Alumni Association, Inc. sponsored its annual scho larship banquet and the mem bers presented him a plaque for his loyalty and dedication to the Charlotte chapter; for which he served as president for eight years. Blakeney continues to be involved in a number of other activities. At the last Grand Conclave of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, held ^uMDe^vea^ ^ for a third consecutive three-' year term. Blakeney is an elder at Memorial United Presbyter ian Church. He is chairperson of the Personnel Committee and serves on the Worship Committee. He is also a member of the Mission Divi sion of Catawba Presbytery and serves on the By-law and Mission Design sub-commit tees. UNCC Passes $1 Million Mark In Grants For the first time ever, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has passed the $1 million mark in grants award ed to the university during a single academic year. Barry Lesley, director of academic grants and con tracts, said that as of June 7, a total of $1,027,225.75 had been awarded UNCC during 1978 79. : UNCC received $78,663.25 during May to push the year’s total past $1 million. That money came from sources outside the university. Lesley says the bulk came from the federal government, but other grants were obtaln L ed from local, state and priv ate agencies to fund various projects. .. The grants support faculty „ research projects, training programs, continuing educa tion and extension opportuni ties, seminars, workshops and conferences, all of which re flect directly on the commun itv "Our faculty deserve* the credit for this expanded out reach program of the univer :: gity,” said Lesley. "They put in a lot of hard work and time in preparing proposals to seek funding for the various pro jects ” Once the grant proposals are filed, it’s up to the funding source to determine how much 1 money will be allotted to the < project. Lesley says funding from external sources has increas ed three-fold in the last four years Total funding for 197* 78 was *M0,000 During that four-year period, UNCC has obtained just over *3 million in outside grants one-third of it within the current fiscal year.
