soon 5 ARE YOU REALLY READY FOR THIS?. Johnson C.Smith, which hasn’t fared too well against the pass this year, will be facing one of the most feared pitchers in the MEAC when they encounter North Carolina A&T State in Greens boro Saturday night. Bob Watson is slowly establishing himself as one of the conference’s top passers. The Golden Bulls are buried near thebottom of the CIAA standings with an 0-3 loop record. Their contest with Lenoir-Rhyne is being regard ed as an “allowable” conference contest. An excellent way to spend the weekend would be to stop off in Salisbury Saturday afternoon to attend Livingstone-Virginia State game, starting at 1:30. Winston-Salem State is hosting toj>-rank ed Norfolk State in Winston-Salem Saturday night, starting al 7:30. Virginia state has been playing super on defense this year, especially against the pass. The opponents have averaged only 28.3 yards per game against VSU. In addition to watching one of the conference’s most stingy defenses, you’ll get an opportunity to see the great George Leonard in action. Leonard is averaging 108.6 yards a contest and is only 764 shy of breaking the career record fo- the most yards gained by an individual in the history of state of Virginia. How’s this for a day’s work? Sid Gardner of Bowie State, was credited with 20 tackles and two quarterbacks sacks against Cheyney State week before last. He was named “CIAA Defen sive Lineman of the Week” for his effort. Winston-Salem State likely will set some sort of attendance record for its home football games this season. The Rama have attracted 40,500 paying fans to their first two home contests, and they likely will have another banner crowd on hand for Saturday night’s contest with Norfolk State. The Rams will close out their home slate with Johnson C. Smith (Oct. 27) and Elizabeth City(Nov.3). The J. C. Smith game will serve as the highlight attraction of their homecoming weekend celebration. The National Association of BlackJournalists cited Lou Brock for his “achievements as an individual and an athlete” at their annual convention in Washington, D.C. last week...Ed “Too Tall” Jones, former Dallas Cowboys great, will make his debut as a professional boxer Nov.3 in Las Cruces, N.M. against an as yet unannounced opponent... Last this reporter among those who likes what he’s seen of Vince Evans...Look for the New York Yankees to trade Reggie Jackson to the California Angels during-or before the coming world series. The only holdup at this point is lackson’s fabulous salary which has two more years to go on his contract, plus an option year. Watching the young University of Mississippi football team take its lump in the game against Missouri on television this past Saturday remind ed me that more than coach Wylie Harris is having it tough this season. We’d do well to remember that both Mr. Harris and his Johnson C.Smith football players are very young at the tough business of competing at the college level. Bet you didn’t know that the best way to sleep soundly is to live sensibly and think sanely. A telephone chat with commissioner Bob Moorman informs thafthe CIAA is anticipating another scheduling problem for its annual Gold Bowl promotion. “It looks like Virginia Union and Norfolk State, if they continue to play well, will be invited to a post season playoff,” Bob stated Monday afternoon, adding “If this comes to pass, we would still have excellent representa tion, with Virginia State, Hampton and Winston Salem in contention.” Moorman says the Golden Bulls looked good “in spots" against Hampton in Virginia last week. He,also indicated that Hampton could become the “sleeper" down the home stretch. You knqw it was bound to happen sooner or later Michelle Nelms a classic beauty and second grade teacher at Woodson Elementary School in Detroit, has charged the Detroit Pistons’ organi zation with “racism and sexism." She’s a member of the Classy Chassis, the Pistons’ cheer squad... Are you1 aware of the fact that a record number of blacks competed in the recent U. S. Tennis Open Tournament? There were 11 Americans and one French playing impressive ly, proving that blacks are a most versatile group, able to compete effectively in any sports. Some people are like blotters-soak it all in, but get it all backwards. The Ole Crystal ball has done well this season, hitting 13 out of 14 correctly including 7-for-7 last week. That’s good reason for trying it again this week. Here goes!...Delaware State will get its first win of the year over UMES and Florida A&M will trounce Howard. Morgan will continue Pal’s downhill slide and A&T will maul Golden Bulls. S.C. State will edge I Hampton will get by Elizabeth City, te is too good for Fayetteville State, late win defeat Livingstone in a close Norfolk State will embarrass Winston te. St. Paul’s will not prevent Virginia registering its fourth straight win. JCSU REGGIE SAUNDERS (42) FINDS DAYLIGHT In Greensboro Saturday Night Golden Bulls Tackle Aggies jonnson amiin University and North Carolina A & T State University, a couple of football teams that have been knocking heads since 1926, will come together Saturday night at Greensboro’s Memo rial Stadium in the 31st renew al of their time-honored series. A & T defeated J. C. Smith, 24-0, here a year ago to take a commanding 27-7-2 advant age in the series. A ranking underdog, the Golden Bulls have not beaten the Aggies since 1973. A & T is 1-2 for the campaign, having defeated Winston-Salem State and lost on consecutive weekends to Nationally-ranked South Caro lina State and equally power ful Bethune-Cookman. In the meantime, J.C. Smith was dropping decisions to Lenior Rhyne, Virginia Union and Hampton. The young Bulls have been showing week-to-week im provement and coach Wylie Harris anticipates an impres sive performance Saturday night. with John Thomas, a dangerous scram bler at quarterback. Harris has bolstered his offense with the shifting of former quarter back Cal Gill to a runningback slot. The Knoxville native has apparently found a home. He is leading the Bulls ball car riers in yards gained rushing. Gill is also one of the better punters in the CIAA. “As long as the athletes don't give up, we’ll find some victories in our schedule,” Harris said. "Nobody said this year was going to be easy " A & T coach Jim McKinley, who never lost to JCSU. inton ed "This matchup is one of the oldest rivalries on the A & T schedule and despite JCSU's past record against the Aggies the game should be closely contested McKinley is looking for stel lar performances from junior return specialist Lon Harris, who blitzed the Bulls defense for 124 yards and scored two touchdowns last year McKin ly is also looking to senior runningback William Joyner, who is recovering from an injury. "Our kicking game must be more consistent if we're going to be success ful,” concluded the. Aggie mentor. Harris feels the key to a Golden Bulls victory will be more consistent offensive out put." The JCSU coach declin ed to name a starting lineup for the 7:30 o’clock kickoff. F ' North s Scotty Williams Is "Player Of The Week” By James C'uthberson Post Staff Writer For the second week.
