“A Celebration
Of Life”
The Performing Arts Guild
Ensemble (PAGE) will pre
sent its newest production, “A
Celebration of Life”, Nov. 1 to
3 at Spirit Square, 110 E. 7th
Street. Performances begin at
8 p.m. on Nov. 1 and 2, and 4
p.m. Nov. 3. Admission is
$3.00.
According to director Ruth
Sloane-Dew, “Celebration”
relates, “...To a total living
experience through poetry,
prose, music and dance. We
want to leave our audiences
with food for thought and with
lasting impressions that are
both appealing and
entertaining.”
The original work is
inspired by African,
Afro-Caribbean and
Afro-American cultures. The
words of writers such as Nikki
Giovanni, Maya Angelou, Don
L®®. Eve Merriam and Jesse
Jackson-to name a few-are
combined with song and dance
to create a unique experience.
PAGE members have also
created their own material for
the production.
“A Celebration of Life” is
more than a staged poetry
reading, according to
Ms. Dew. “The show is a
high-spirited theatrical per
formance.”
PAGE was founded in 1978
by local artist and musicians
around the idea that poetry
should be performed, not just
read. “We gathered at the
Afro-American Cultural
Center to discuss ways of
creating a supportive, sharing
environment for writers in the
community,” said poet and
artist T.J. Reddy, the group’s
administrative director and
co-founder.
Other members of the core
company include production
choreographer Karen
Meadows and Musical Direc
tor Michael Porter. Friends of
the ensemble appearing in
"Celebration” include Melvin
McCullough, Demetrius
Parker and Ted Stewart.
While currently performing
on a semi-professional basis,
Reddy says he hopes the com
panv will soon move to s full
professional status. PAGE
will play an engagement at
Davidson College, and has
accepted a residency at
Bowdoin College in Maine.
