Former National Basketball
Association star-turned
broadcaster-author Bill
Russell will be host of
NBC-TV’s “Saturday Night
Live” Nov. 3 (11:30 p.m.-l
a.m. NYT)
Russell, who was a member
of the famed Boston Celtics
team that won 11 NBA
championships in 13 years,
from the mid 1950s through the
late 1960s, and who was five
times voted Most Valuable
Player in the NBA, joins
"Saturday Night Live’s”
repertory company - Jane
Curtin, Garrett Morris, Bill
Murray, Laraine Newman
and Gil da Radner - in a series
of sketches.
Since leaving the sport in
1977, after serving as coach
and general manager of the
Seattle Supersonics for four
years, Russell has been active
in television broadcasting,
contributing human-interest .
segments on KABC-TV in Los
Angeles. His autobiography.
“Second Wind.” written with
Taylor Branch, was published
this year and offers a variety
of thoughts "on myself,
society, race, women,
prejudice, celebrityhood and
romance.”'
Of himself, Russell writes,
"I am a misfit - and a triple
threat at that. Not only am I
tall enough to make a lot of
people uncomfortable, but I
am also Black and infamous
as an athlete. No wonder I
have quirks.”
