Self-appointed consumer advo cates seem to be proliferating at a rate comparable to ants at a picnic, and many are venting their wrath on the health services pro fessions. No doubt public exposure of wrongdoing of a few isolated cases involving professionals makes for interesting listening on the airwaves -- and sells millions of dollars worth of books - but consumers should beware of self inflicted injustice if they adopt the thinking that “you have to watch all doctors like a hawk or you'll surely get ripped off.” Such think ing is similar to imagining that all members of a given race are dishonest because one member of that race is in jail for robbing banks. The dental profession, for ex ample, seems to be taking quite a verbal clouting in the advocacy department these days. Popular warnings range from “be careful or your dentist may unnecessarily X-ray everything, including your wallet,” to “always get a 2nd & 3rd opinion before giving the go-ahead for dental care, or you’ll surely wind up with an outrageously high bill!” Sound advice? Perhaps, but let’s consider the other side of the picture: In these days of outlandishly high malpractice suit settlements, is it logical to think any doctor would place himself purposely in a questionable position? 2nd & 3rd opinions by other doctors can be beneficial - often are recommended by your own doctor - but beware of conducting a fee-bidding campaign, unless you seek simply the lowest fee without regard for anything else. We must assume the majority of professionals function legitimate ly, as does the majority of any large business group. So, if you approach each doctor with the attitude that he is probably a crook of -some kind, you prevent the development of an-unstrained co operation doctor-patient relation ship, so necessary to the ultimate success of your treatment. It is difficult, if not impossible, to wholeheartedly follow the direct ions of someone in whom you have not placed your trust! Above all it should be remem bered, that your doctor’s practice is his business, his livelihood. He wants his treatment of you to be successful...he wants you to be pleased and satisfied as this builds a good and constant practice. Logical?
