SUIT Deal BY BILL JOHNSON TELLING IT LIKE IT REALLY IS. Cedric Maxwell, the lad who almost sjflgle-handedly placed the University of North Carolina on the nation’s basketball map, is the NBA’s most accurate shooter. According to recent releases, the Boston Celtics star is hitting 61.8 percent of his field goal attempts. Pineville native Walter Davis, who starred with the University of North Carolina, ranks ninth among the league’s top shooters with a 55.1 percentage. John Duncan, a die-hard Winston-Salem State supporter and a long-time close friend, is coming to town Saturday to root for the Rams when they tangle with our Bulls in the CIAA’s “Game of the Week”. There’s a problem. John, along with several thousand other supporters of the two teams, will have to find a way to get into Brayboy gymnasium. The JCSU campus facility is far too small for the large number of fans who’d like to attend tnis big contest. Somebody should recommend coach Robert Moore for high honors. I can’t recall this old town being as excited about anything since Morganna left town. Moore’s young basketball team has local sports fans reeling as did Morganna. Steve Joyner, the knowledgable little floor master who was a picture of excite ment while playing with the Bulls a few years back, is of the opinion the Baby Bulls will be “ready” by tournament time. Says assistant Coach“Jbvner “We’ve brought them along rather slowly. We didn’t want them to go stale in the late stages of the season.” Can you recall a time when the Bulls were on the happy side of the won-lost column this late in the season?....A win here Saturday night will likely send them into the tournament riding in the “expected to win’’ seat. Olympic hero Jesse Owens’ condition has worsened. Owens set 11 world records during his athletic career. His physicians have diagnosed lung cancer and its spread ing. Now that the Denver Nuggets have gotten rid of George McGinnis, will David ThomDson eet the axe next? ^As a Dallas Cowboys’ fan. I’d like to see Tom Landry forgive both Thomas “Holly wood” Henderson and Ed “Too Tall” Jones and give them another chance to play with my heroes. Henderson was dismissed last November because of a “disruptive internal influence” and has asked for forgiveness and the opportunity to rejoin the Cowboys. ~“Too Tall”, who quit the team to turn to~ boxing as a money-making venture, is being accused of “Stooping” without permission. He reportedly is also interested in returning to the team. A little success has a way of changing opinions....When Maryland was losing, their coach Lefty Driscell was rated by the news media at the top of the “worse coach in the land” list. Now that the Terrapins are rolling and are perched comfortably on the top of the ACC standings, ole Lefty is going to receive unanimous nods for ACC “Coach of the Year” honors. Virginia State has named A1 Tabor Jr., former assistant with the Cleveland Browns football coaching squad and a one-time head football coach at Southern University, as its head football coach. —IH-Jthfi_final voting Mike O'Koren will probably go down in history as the ACC “Player of the Year” for 1979-80. But. that’s because no blacks are voting in the polls. If they were, I would think Hawkeye Whitney would get the nod. Whitney, in my opinion, contributes more to his team than O’Koren does to the Tar Heels. Will someone please tell me how to get cablevision. I have tried bribery, cursing, praying, cajolery, pleading and just plain “down-on-my-knees begging to no avail. It’s rather disgusting to read the TV listing each evening and see all of the good things that are happening to HBO without becoming a part of it. How come Norfolk State (5) and Winston Salem (10) are rated in the top 20 NAIA teams and our Bulls are no where to be found????? John Duncan joins Gerald (Johnson of our staff and a host of other followers of the Golden Bulls in rating Sonny Proctor a “complete basketball player.” That’s a lofty honor for a deserving performer. Have you ever wondered if Mean Joe Greene would have given the little boy the shirt off his back if he’d been black? Happy days are here again!....Charles Ramseur, the insuranceman is contemplat ing on returning to the golf course next season....Just when I was wondering how I was going to pay my green fees this year....If he does, my prayers and concerns would have been answered. Here’s a public THANK YOU to Teddy Curry and all of the fine people in the CIAA for selecting me for a special award in .Norfolk during the conference tournament^ CIAA's Game Of Week Bulls Host Rams Here Saturday Night Johnson C. Winston-Salem State challenges the ten game home winning streak ot the number two ranked Bulls Best advice is to come early. The Smith women's team will host the lady Rams in a 5:30 p.m. con test. The girls have won two out of their last three and are eager to avenge a close loss to Winston-Salem two weeks ago. Tht men's team is certainly in the same frame of mind "The game two weeks ago was a well played contest by both teams," commented Bob Moore "The Rams had the home court advantage then and 1 expect the Brayboy crowd to be a factor in determin ing the outcome Satur day.” Clarence “Bighouse" Gaines is well aware of the effect the Brayboy crowd. "It's noisy; it's often fiery hot and you've got all those packed people breathing down your back," ex plained the Rams' head coach. One player sure to make it hot is Blue Oliver. The sophomore forward has been on a shooting ram pag^th^as^hre^weeks. Coach Robert Moore ...Has Bulls sizzling hot leading the teams in scor ing (18 points per game), and field goal accuracy (58 percent).
