Filmmaker-Poet To Appear At Mvers Park Baotut Fhnreli Dr. Paul B. Newman, Chairman of the Humanities Division at Queens College here, will present a program of poetry and original films Sunday, April 27, at 4 p.m. The presentation - a part of the annual Hyacinth Artists Series at The Myers Park Baptist Church - will be held in the church’s Great Hall and is open to the public without admission charge. The church is located at 1900 Queen Rd. Newman has produced a number of colorful and personal motion pictures (o dramatize his original poetry compositions, including "On The Coast” and “The Wash ington Trail” which he will feature' in his presentation. Both are 16mm color and run about thirty minutes "On The Coast” features stun ningly beautiful sea coast shots of the Carolina* from the Outer Banks to Cape Romain. The filmed images of the coastal area are accompanied by Newman’s poetry and appropriate music. The poems describe experiences of coastal living. “The Washington Trail,” a Bi centennial film, moves along the same trail taken by General George Washington in his Southern Journey of 1781. It carries the viewer through North and South Carolina including scenes at the Orton Plantation, Big landing (where Francis Marion received supplies during the American Re volution), Hopsewee Plantation (built by one of the signers of The Declaration of Independence), St. James Church and shots of the original King’s Highway. Newman is a graduate of -the University of Chicago (B.S.), the University of Iowa (M.F.A.) and received his Ph.D. at the Uni versity of Chicago in 1958. He has been a faculty member at Queens College since 1963 having, earlier, served as a weather forecaster in the United States Army Air Force (USAAF), a lecturer at the Uni versity of Puerto Rico and an 1 Assistant Professor of English at Kansas State University. His poetry has been published over 250 times in periodicals in cluding Southern Poetry Review, Carolina Quarterly, Shenandoah, Massachusetts Review, Kansas r, Virginia Quarterly Re tail] Review and Literary He is the author of five p«hii«h—i hooks^h^^ieetahandtheF«“L_ K ‘tain, Dust of the Sun, The Ladder of Love, Paula and The Hose of the Saco. In addition, he has won numer ous poetry awards including the William Billings Fiske Award for Poetry from the University of Chicago (1965), the Roanoke-Cho wan Award (1968), Crucible awards from Atlantic Christian College (1989, 1970) and the North Carolina Poetry Society Award (1978). He also won an additional Roanoke-Chowan award in 1971 for his publication The Ladder of Love. The Hyacinth series, in which Newman is appearing, is an exten sion at The Myers Park Baptist church’s mission efforts, designed to provide high quality educational and cultural programs to the com munity throughout the year at no Post!
