Baptists Endorse Carter. Hunt Special To The Post Raleigh - The General Baptist State Convention of North Caro lina, the state's largest black organization, endorse the re-elect ion bid of President Jimmy Carter last week and threw its support behind eight candidates running for state offices in the May 6 Democratic Primary election. Last week the Convention's Political Action Committee recom mended that the more than 360,000 members of the Convention sup port Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. and U. S. Senator Robert B. Morgan in their re-election campaigns while also backing State Rep. Carl Stew art of Gastonia for Lieutenant Governor. The Committee met this week and endorsed five other state office seekers including: J.P. Carlton for Association Justice of the Supreme Court; George Breece for Secret ary of State; Craig Phillips for superintendent of Public Instruct ion; Jim Long for Insurance Com missioner; and Ed Re of row for State Auditor. The Political Action Committee Interviewed several candidates ind was interested in their stances Dn affirmative action, higher edu cation, housing, and particularly on employment of young minor ities. They also raised questions about prison reform, aid for the elderly, transportation and cre dibility in government. ENDORSE HUNT The North Carolina General Baptist State Convention has en dorsed Governor Jim Hunt for re-election according to convention president Dr. John R. Manley. "After giving careful considera tion to each of the candidates for governor the convention's political action committee is recommend ing that its 360,000 members sup port Governor Hunt for re-elect ion," Dr. Manley said. "Governor Hunt has an excellent ■ecord in minority affairs. In the ast three and a half years he has fiven minorities a greater voice in jovernment than ever before. He has worked to give all the people of North Carolina fair and equal îccess to education and economic jpportunity," said GBSC presi dent, Dr. Manley. He said in the past three and a half years Governor Hunt has ippointed over 500 blacks and Mher minorities to state boards ind commissions and to high posts in the executive branch. Through Governor Hunt's lead ership more than $40 million has been appropriated for enhance ment of the state's five tradition ally black universities. In the past three and a half years Governor Hunt has helped bring more than 100,000 new jobs to North Carolina, the result of more than $6.5 billion in new and ex panded industry. ' 'This year's election is one of the most crucial in recent years," said Dr. Manley. "I want to urge all North Carolinians to support a candidate who will begin the new decade with fair and compassion ate leadership that assures all people an equal voice in govern ment." The convention also endorsed Senator Robert Morgan for the U. S. Senate and Carl Stewart for Lieutenant Governor. Remember, it's important that you go to the polls May 6 AND VOTE!
