Warrants Reelection Governor Hunt's Record, Goals By Susan Ellsworth Post Staff Writer Seeking his second term, what has Governor Jim Hunt done to warrant re-election and what are his goals for North Carolina's future? According to news releases, un der the Hunt Administration in dustries have announced plans to invest $6.5 million in new and expanded plants, bringing 100,000 new jobs to this state. Student grades have improved, a release said, after Hunt initiated a Primary Reading Program and a ninimum competency test. Hunt also appropriated special funds for the state's five predominantly black universities. Three years before Hunt's go vernorship electric rates were in creasing 21 percent a year. Since he reorganized the Utilities Com mission, rates have increased only seven percent a year. He enacted new crime legisla tion which included a Speedy Trial Law, a prison construction pro gram and mandatory minimum prison sentences. Not only did taxes not increase during Hunt's term but they were cut last year. Other highlights of Hunt's Ad ministration include state money allocated for child day care pro grams and new programs for senior citizens, including senior activity centers. The first black cabinet Secretary, Howard Lee was appointed during Hunt's term. His agenda for the 1980s em phasizes continued progress in Economic development, education and energy. Hunt is calling for more recruit ment of industry and better skills training programs. The proposed skills program requires more accurate informa tion on future jobs. It includes better vocational education and career guidance in high school. The plan calls for improved skills training in community colleges and technical institutes along with greater cooperation with industry. More apprenticeship programs to teach advanced skills and combine classroom instruction with on-the job training are being proposed. Among his other priorities are maintaining a good transporration system and finding a way to control toxic and hazardous wastes. - In education Hunt is advocating improved public school instruction and greater efforts to prevent dropouts. The governor said he supports a strong program to develop and use alternative sources of energy.
