County Commission Terminates CETA Programs

U.S. Senator Alan Granston (D.
Calif.) a member of a special
Democratic Task Force on the
economy, said Congress should
enact a targeted anti-inflationary
tax cut to take effect next year.
He recommended "A tax reduc
tion is necessary to induce eco
nomic growth without inflation."

According to the Charlotte
Mecklenburg School immunization
records, 1,000 elementary and
junior high students need to re
ceive at least one shot before
school opens in the fall.
Four thousand senior high school
aged students are judged not to be
currently in compliance.
All students needing innocula
tion when the school term begins
on Sept. 2, will be suspended until
proof of immunization is shown.

terans agree with a majority of the
public that America should have

these veterans said they were
proud to serve and would do it
again if asked. This was among the
findings in a survey conducted by
the Veterans Administration.

Johnson C. Smith University's
faculty in the Social Science Di
vision recently completed a month
long workshop designed to upgrade
and introduce innovative methods
in teaching social science.
This workshop was one compo
nent of a $150,000 three-year pro
gram funded by Minority Institu
tions Science Improvement Pro
grams (MISIP) of the National
Science Foundation.

Despite success in meeting the
demand for higher production,
more efficient cows, and milk
lower in butterfat and higher milk
solids, serious challenges face the
dairy industry.
"The most immediate pressure
on dairy manager* is inflation,"
according to Anson Bertrand, a
director of science and education
with the U.S. Department of Agri
culture.
Bertrand said energy cost are
forcing the dairy industry to rely
more on solar energy and substi
tuting some gasoline for alcohol.
A growing world demand for
food may be the strongest pressure
Bertrand said.

Set for July 20-25 at the Uni

One hundred youngsters from
across the state got a chance to go
camping July 13-18 on the shores of
Ken Lake near Henderson.
Children ages 8-12 who are re
ceiving aid from their local social
services department were eligible.
Sponsored by two Departments
of Human Resources divisions.
Social Services and a Girl Scout
Council, the camp was staffed by
volunteer instructors.

Charlotte radio executive Sis Kap
lan was named chairman of the
Committee Advisory Board for
WFAE, the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte's FM radio
station.
Ms. Kaplan, who is general
manager of WAYS, will head a
1 29-member advisory board which

and problems.

William P. Malone has been
appointed Assistant Vice Chancel
lor for University Relations at
North Carolina Central University.
Malone has served as the Uni
versity's director of Development
since 1968 and since 1973 as Execu
tive Director of the North Carolina
Central University Foundation.
His duties in the new position will
include assisting the vice chan
cellor in the Office of Admissions,
Alumni Affairs, the Athletic De
partment, the Career Counseling
and Placement Bureau and the
Development Office, the News Bu
reau, the Public Relations Office
and the Security Department.
Wachovia Corporation's, income
before securities transactions for
the second quarter was $13,760
million. This was 17.6 percent
higher than the $11,703 million
earned in the same period last
year.
Earnings per share was 87 cents,
an increase of 17.6 percent from
the same period a year ago.
John Medlin Jr., Wachovia's
chief executive officer noted pri
mary factors in the earnings in
crease were a higher net interest
income and strong bond trading
profits.

A $100,000 grant will play a
major role in strengthening the
humanities program offered at
Bennett College in Greensboro.
The grant provides assistance for
faculty research.
Stipends ranging from $100
$1,500 will be available for hu
manities research.
