Toe North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and its Aeronautics Council have an nounced a new feature in the 1981 Transportation Improvement Pro gram. Over $3 million will be allocated in state airport funds for 38 of North Carolina’s 71 publications owned airports for improvements. Additionally, the program will reserve another $426,567 in state funds for potential future projects to receive federal funding after the Federal airport program is re newed later this year. + + + + Mecklenburg County Commis sioners voted at their last meeting not to adopt a proposed sliding fee scale for the County-sponsored Hot Lunch Program for the Elderly. It also determined criteria for pro gram participation. + + + + To recruit volunteers for human services agencies in Mecklenburg and Union Counties, the Voluntary Action Center will sponsor a Vo luntary Action Day. Eight human services agencies will be represented at the Monroe Mall on Friday, September 12 from 6-8 p.m. and in the Eastland Mall on Saturday, September 13 from 12 to 2 p.m. Members will answer questions, interview applicants and sign up volunteers. + + + + A. Vernon Weaver, Administra tor of the U.S. Small Business Administration announced recent ly the agency will establish statewide Small Business Develop ment Centers (SBDCs) in Alabama and Massachusetts during the 1980 fall academic semester. Both the University of Alabama and the University of Massachu setts will serve as lead schools for the SB DC. Named PNG Energy Company, the new subsidiary itself owns five new subsidiaries structured and named for propane, energy pro ductions, petroleum, conservation and explorations. Residents of Boulevard Homes Neighborhood Park in District 3 will meet Thursday, September 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the recreation center, 1820 Brooksvale Street. + + + + Pic ’N Pay Stores, Inc. had higher sales but lower net income ■ for the fourth quarto- in the 1980 fiscal year announced Alvin Levine, chairman of the board recently. Sales were over $25 million compared with more than $23 million last year. Net income was $.63 per share compared with $.67 per share in last year’s forth quarter. Levine credited sales increased as a result of opening additional stores. However, the recession created customer resistance, he said, holding existing store sales increases to only 1.5 percent for the year. Nominal sales increases did not offset inflationary increases of company expenses. The result was a decline in earnings of 9 percent for 1980. + + + + Robert P. Kolin of Raleigh has joined the North Carolina Demo cratic Party Unity Campaign. Kolin, 24, is a former reporter for the Raleigh News and Observer and a freelance writer. He grad uflted from Duke University. This campaign is an umbrella organization for all Democratic candidates. + + + + The North Carolina Security Commission recovered $147,042.72 in unemployment insurance over payments during August, accord ing to figures released by the commissions anti-fraud unit. Among 222 persons who have claimed or currently are claiming unemployment insurance benefits, 61 percent were found to have been overpaid $52,502. During August, 94 percent were convicted. In overpayments, $27,375.62 was . recovered through refunds to the'1 commission and $119,667 was re covered by withholding new bene fits to claimants who have been overpaid.
