Chur6h News Brie fs East StonewalTs Second Oratorical Contest Will Be Held Sunday By Teresa Burns Post Staff Writer Everywhere you turn communication seems to be a problem. But not so at East Stonewall AME Zion Church. "Some people may think that aratory between young people is a dying art,” explains Rena Blake, member of the Pastor's Aid Board at East Stonewall, "But that’s not so.” And to prove it Ms. Blake has coordinated a second annual Oratorical Contest which will be held Sunday, September 14, at 3 p.m! Last year’s winner was Roderick Ross. This year Ross will com pete to keep his title of "Your Orationist,” against his sister Raini Ross, Ricky Beatty, Linda Shropshire, Keith Chisholm and Vivian Cherry. First, second and third place prizes will be given to winners. uiner participants in the program include Antonette Murphy, Courtney McCoy, Reginald Murphy, Arthur and Jessie Walls, Shaffron Smith, Delcenia Simpson, and guest soloist Delores Miller. The Angelic and Gospel Choirs of East Stonewall will also per form. Oratorical Contest, red by the Pastor’s ard, is a fund raising adventure to help meet the needs of the pastor, Rev. James E. McCoy. This event also gives the youth of the church a sense of pride, confidence and faith, according to Ms. Blake. The church members of East Stonewall, located at 1729 Griers Grove Rd., cordially invite the public to attend. Also the Men’s Chorus from Mt. Olive Presbyte rian Church will perform in concert at East Stonewall Sunday, September 14, at 6 p.m. This program is spon sored by Stewardess Board No. 1. Everyone is invited. Rev. James E. McCoy will be in Revival this week with the White Rock AME Zion Church in Granite Quarry, N.C. PRINCE OF PEACE A special time has ar rived for the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Four distinct events are occurring or will occur and one of these is a permanent gesture Christians strive to maintain. On September 14 at ll a m. Rev. Bryant E. Clan cy Jr., pastor and senior Vice President of the Southeastern District will deliver the sermon. At 3 p.m. Rev. Richard T. Hinz, President of the Southeast ern District will preach. NEW EMMANUEL The 36th Annual Pastor’s Anniversary at New Em manuel Congregational United Church of Christ, 3546 Beatties Ford Rd., will be celebrated Sunday, Sep tember 21 at 3 p.m. Rev. Nimrod C. SALEM BAPTIST Salem Baptist Church, 5318 Church Rd., begins their fall revival Sunday, September 14, at 7 p.m. Rev. LeMar Foster, pastor of Second Calvary Baptist Church will be the opening speaker. Beginning Monday, Sep tember 15, and through out the week, at 7:30 p.m. Rev. Jeremiah Robinson, pastor of the First May field Memorial Baptist Church will be the evan gelist. The public is invited to attend these inspirational services. Rev. G. Davis is the associate pastor of/ Salem Baptist Church. BETHLEHEM CENTER Services will be conduct ed by Rev. Bobby Morgan at Bethlehem Center Sun day, September 21, at 4 p.m. to raise money for a new half-way house. According to Rev. Mor gan the old half-way house has been closed and do nations will be taken at the service to insure a home for men getting out of prison. “This house will aid men getting out of prison with no families and no where to go,” Rev. Morgan stated. Rev. Morgan is now incarcerated at Camp Green. There, he became a minister three years ago and is now the camp minister. He is allowed to preach at various func tions; and is released for work duty five days a week; and is allowed to go home each weekend. His scheduled release from Camp Green will be within the next two-three weeks. The topic for this service will be “What Is Your Calling?" Rev Morgan has invited several choirs in cluding the Carolinas. The public is invited to come out to Bethlehem Center, located at 2705 Baltimore Ave. The half way house is a project of Rev. Billy Morgan’s in conjunction with his advi sor Rev. Joseph Baucom, pastor of Long Grove Christian Advent Church in Monroe. BAPTIST ASSOCIATION The Young Adult Depart ment of the Mecklenburg General Baptist Associa tion will hold a Mock Wed ding Saturday, September 13, at 4 p.m. at the Green ville Center. GREATER BETHEL The Sarah Allen Mission ary Society of Greater Bethel AME Church, 201 Grandin Rd., will sponsor a September Health Fair September 20 from 10 a m - 4 p m. This group advocates that it is better to know now than later and “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Free services provided by the missionary society include blood pressure, sickle cell, diabetic, dental, speech and hearing, T.B and hemoglobin screening. Children from age two months to six years will be given free complete phy sical examinations also. There will be a nutritional display and a family plan ning display as well. Immunizations will be given but you must have a present record of any past immunizations to be eligible. There will also be short conferences about Social Security, the Food Stamp Program, Medicare, Me dicaid, a CPR demonstra tion, and a self-defense demonstration. -_ The public is invited to take advantage of these free services.
