BY BILL JOHNSON TELLING IT LIKE IT REALLY IS. The revitalized athletic department at Johnson C. Smith deserves lots of credit for the expert job they’re doing in rebuilding the Golden Bulls’ athletic program. Wylie Harris has generated new enthu siasm among the football players, Bob Moore is putting together a basketball dynasty and now words come to me that Bill Lide has recruited four of the highly-prized tennis players in collegiate ranks. You can do your part by turning out Saturday night to help fill up Memorial Stadium and root Harris and his herd to victory over Lenoir-Rhyne College. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Bet you didn’t know that there’s a move afoot to organize a Black Baseball Players Association. Most of the top professionals are scheduled to meet this winter to discuss the plight of Black players when their careers are over. Buddy Young and Wilma Rudolph are the recipients of the 1980 Whitney M. Young Jr. Memorial awards....Spencer Haywood, the troubled NBA player who was suspended by the Los Angeles Lakers during the cham Sionship playoffs, is blaming Abdul-Jabbar \r his troubles. Virginia Union has plucked Joe Taylor from Eastern Illinois University. Taylor will serve as the offensive coordinator to head football coach Willard Bailev. He will Ialso be coordinating VU’s strength and conditioning programs. Wylie Harris has made some last-minute changes in his staff. He recently added Bob Smith as a part-time coach who will help out with the defensive backs in addition to scouting during the 1980 season. If Johnson C. Smith does not have the best quarterbacks in the CIAA, it’ll not be because of poor teaching. William “Red” Jackson, who grooms the signal-callers and helps out with defensive backs, is one of the best ever to play the position. He was picture book during his undergraduate days at North Carolina A&T. lam aooui overlapping seasons: At the moment, we have football and baseball going full blast and professional basketball will join the parade when the new NBA campaign gets underway on October 10, with a nationally televised contest between the World Champion Los Angeles Lakers and the Seattle Supersonics. If you’re looking ahead, the 77th World Series will get underway in the National league park the night of October 14. It’s not encouraging to report that only 33 percent of the players in the National Basketball Association have their college degrees. It means that an alarming 67 percent have not completed their college requirements. Atlanta Braves owner Ted Turner has announced publicly that Braves manager Bob Cox can manage his team forever... That’s a good sign that Cox will get the axe in due time. The California Angels have turned down Bob Baylor’s bid for the extension of his contract which calls for more than $1 million a season. The bottom line is that Baylor likely will be placed on the trading block at the end of this season. The City of New York, which is struggling (like most of us) to make financial ends meet is faced with more money problems. An engineering survey will shortly detail the need for a major repair job at Yankee Stadium at a cost of several hundred thousand dollars. NYC officials are still reeling from the more than $300 thousand on the famed ball park. You’d have to agree with Tampa Bay quarterback Doug Williams, who recently stated that the biggest critic of athletes are the non-athletes who have never looked in a play book and do not understand the game. Are you aware that the better football teams provide their quarterbacks with the luxury of an average 3.2 seconds in which to throw the football? *7 would surprise no one if Frank Robin son is named manager of the New York Mets before the year’s end. My early predictions are that the Houston Oilers will not do as well with Kenny Stabler as they did with Don Pastorini. Our first week of picking the “winnahs” is a rather hazardous undertaking since most of the teams are playing in their first game and our communications have broken down. Nevertheless, here goes! Elizabeth City will cruise by Bowie State and Fayetteville will get by St. Paul’s. N.Y. Tech will defeat Hampton and Johnson C. Smith wiU sur prise Lenoir-Rhyne. Norfolk State will bounce back against Livingstone, Virginia Union will blast Clark. S.C. State will rout Delaware State. Bethune-Cookman will edge Texas Southern, but the University of Miami will send Florida A&M reeling to the undefeated ranks. Winston-Salem State will down AAT. Virginia State will upset N.C. Central. ’ Here Saturday Night Rejuvinated Bulls Open 1980 Football Campaign Wylie Harris' rejuvinat ed Golden Bulls will be able to afford few mistakes against an experienced, veteran Lenoir-Rhyne of fense. The Bears operate out of the veer, a showcase attack for the slick option talents of quarterback Craig Cor bett. The senior signal caller will have powerful Larry Rucker, a runaway locomotive of a fullback, to ride down the line before deciding to tuck it in, turn Rucker loose, or pitch out to fleet Tony Smith at tailback. The Lenoir Rhyne senior offensive line has played together for three seasons, led by All NA1A-26 guard Steve Strickland. Corbett will take advantage of any de fensive weaknesses that the Bulls will show. The visitors from Hick ory will face the same problem in trying to shake the Golden Bull offense. The line will average over 245 pounds from tight end to tackle with the power coming from the right side in Jeff Coan and Ray Ellis. Familiar faces also fill the backfield with Cal Gill at quarterback, Jeff Steele and Darrell Riddenhour at fullback, and Ray Rainey and Mark Saunders at run ningback. Look for coach Harris to unleash a bevy of promising, young speed sters during the year. It appears likely that Memorial Stadium’s score board will be lighting up frequently Saturday night. The Bears have a stronger, established running game, the Bulls a better receiving corps. Both defenses must fill in gaps with a half dozen new faces. Both de fensive lines are question marks; while the Bulls are sound at linebacker, the Bears are solid in the secondary. rreshman defensive tackle Kimberly Byrum of Fayetteville took the title of "Strongest Bull, Pound for Pound" last week. The 18-year-old benched press 360 pounds and squatted 440 pounds Kimberly weighs 200 pounds. In a short time he is going to be one tough Bull to deal with. Guard Jeff Coan took top honors in the squats with a 555 pound lift. This is the fifth meeting | between the two schools. Johnson C. Smith won the opener in 1976 while Lenoir Rhyne has since won three straight. According to L-R Sports Information Direc tor Rick Strunk, the city of Hickory is excited over new head coach Henry Vansant and will be flood ing Memorial Stadium with thousands of Bear backers The new admission policy that allows 12 year-old and younger in free when ac companied by a parent or guardian is expected to draw a large opening night crowd. Game time is set at 7:30 p.m. Revolution Golf Course Closings The greens at the City's Revolution Park Golf Course are being prepared for winter. Therefore several closings will be necessary in the next few weeks. \IK4 C Football Roundup Bulldogs Romn, Homests Lose Durham - The Mid-East ern Athletic Conference opened its 1980 season Sa turday with the South Caro lina Bulldogs jumping on the Virginia State Trojans 35-7, and Delaware State College losing to Salisbury State 27-18 S.C.
