King Wins Rap Award Described as having a fabulous career that spans two decades, singer Ben E. King won the Ori ginal 13 Award at the 4th Annual Family Affair sponsored by the Jack The Rapper music tip sheet in Atlanta, Ga. Published by former veteran disc jockey Jack Gibson, the pu blication’s convention of deejays and music industry figures attract ed more than 500 persons from coast to coast. King copped the highest of a dozen awards at the dinner where all were named in honor of de ceased members of the music profession. In his twenty years in show business that first brought him to fame as a member of the Driftqps; ij King had had such record hits^on " the Atlantic label as “Dance With Me,” ‘tThere Goes My Baby,” and “Spanish Harlem.” His current LPs demonstrate why his unique style has served as a model for other younger singers. In the music industry, the Rapper is one of the most in fluential papers read. It chronicles weekly the news of Black artists and Black-owned radio stations and lists the ratings of singles and albums. McKay Chats With Stars Of New CBS Shows CHARLOTTE - WBTV’s Enter tainment Editor, Mike McKay, will interview the stars of two of the new CBS shows premiering this fall, on WBTV’s hour-long noon time show, "Top O’ The Day,” Wednesday, September 24th and Friday, September 26th. On Wednesday, Mike talks to Tom Mason and Hector Elizondo, who play the lead roles in "Freebie and the Bean,” a comedy-adven ture about two big-city plain clothes police sergeants. Freebie (Mason) is a swinging bachelor not adverse to cutting corners with police procedure, while Bean (Eli zondo) is the consummate con servative family man. Friday, Mike converses with Bibi Besch and Robert Hogan of "The Secrets of Midlands Heights,” a powerful drama about the young people and their parents of a quiet Mid-western college town. Hogan plays the part of a widower and professor involved in a secret affair with the dissatis fied wife (Besch) of a local busi nessman. A) Trussel is a band with eight dynamic members; B) Trus sel is a group with a hit song “Love Injection”; C) Trussel was found ed in 1972 by four students at Virginia State University; or D) All of the above. If you chose D you are correct. Trussel is all of these things and more. Their debut single "Love Injection” was released in Octo ber, 1979 and it didn’t take much time to hit the charts. It hit R&B, disco and the easy listening charts, thus exemplifying the versatility of the group. Their album is soon to appear. Their having performed with Evelyn "Champagne” King, Gra ham Central Station, Earth, Wind and Fire, The Ohio Players, The Commodores, and the Manhattans, only goes to show what league they fit into. Each member is classically trained and five have advanced degree* in music. Between them they have the knowledge to control over 30 instruments. They also write and arrange every note of their music. This group is simply an abundance of talent and each member is a complete performer H. Lorenzo Macklin Jr., bass guitar and percussion. A 1977 graduate of Virginia State Uni versity where he held band leader and music director posts; he stu died music for eight years. Hannon Land, trombone, lower brass instruments, six- and twelve string guitars, percussion and vo cals. A 1973 graduate of Virginia State, Hannon has played music for 14 years. Lynwood Jones, soprano, tenor and alto saxophone, percussion and vocals. Lynwood has studied music for 13 years and graduated from Virginia State in 1973. Michael Gray, acoustic and elec tric guitar and vocals. He is also an accomplished French horn player. A native of Petersburg, Virginia, and a cum laude graduate of Virginia State, he has been a musician for 12 years. Larry Tynes, electric and acou stic piano, clarinet, synthesizers and lead vocals. A 1973 cum laude of Virginia State, Larry prepared himself with 23 years of study. Michael Spratley, lead and back ground vocals. A native of Hope well, Virginia, Michael has studied voice and instrumental music for 13 years and has won numerous awards for his singing of jazz, progressive gospels and R4B. Ronald Smith, drums, shakere, tambourine, cowbell, bells, quiro, cabasa, congas and vocals. Born in Englewood, New Jersey, Ron graduated from Virginia State in 1978. He has studied music for ten years, and was co-writer on the album "Star Wars and Other Ga lactic Funk.*’ William F. McGee, trumpet, flugelhorn, flute, synthesizer, sha kere and vocals. He has played music for 15 years, and graduated from Virginia State in 1978. According to the group their album “Love Injection,” produced by Elektra Asylum Records, “flaunts our roots in R&B, jazz, gospel, and rock. We consider ourselves based on the ideology of pure creativity and southern funk." Trussed will rock, knock and sock anything or anyone into liking their sounds-and if you don’t believe it, just try a Trussel Ray Charles To Star In WBTV Musical Special John Schneider, who co-stars as Bo Duke on "The Dukes of Haz zard" and a former resident of Sandy Springs, Ga., returns to Georgia for an hour-long musical tribute to the Peach State in “John Schneider-Back Home," to be broadcast Wednesday, September 24 at 8 p m on WBTV, Channel 3. Guest starring on the special, which was taped on location in Georgia, are the inimitable Ray Charles, and country-western singer Barbara Mandrell. “Chinatown” Is WBTV Saturday Night Movie Jack Nicholson and Faye Duna way star in "Chinatown,” Roman Polanski’s highly acclaimed movie about a baffling mystery involving political corruption and private scandal, to be rebroadcast as a special movie presentation, Satur day, September 20 at 8:30 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3. John Houston, director of such film classics as “The Maltese Falcon" and "The Big Sleep," co-stars. Robert Towne won an Academy Award for best original screenplay for "Chinatown." The time is 1937 and the place, Los Angeles, then a thriving boom town riddled with corruption as shady political dealings and land speculation provide opportunities for the powerful to make millions J.J. Gittes (Nicholson), a dap per, ambitious but small-time pri vate eye specializing in divorce case .investigations, is catapulted into the middle of this big-time wheeling and dealing when he accepts as a client a beautiful socialite, Evelyn Mulwray (Miss Dunaway). When Cross’ henchmen assault him, Gittes realizes he is on to something more complex and dangerous than he had thought Lou Grant Show Begins Its Fourth Season Working a double shift gives city editor Lou Grant a eye-opening encounter with the Los Angeles Tribune's eccentric nightside staff, on the fourth season premiere of the Emmy Award-winning series "Lou Grant,” to be broadcast Monday, September 22 at 10 p.m. on WBTV, Channel 3 in tne premiere episode, a big story breaks, and it takes all of Lou’s tact to handle the night crew that has its own established way of doing things. There’s a veteran rewrite man named Hal (guest star Richard Erdman), who moon lights as a mail order preacher; a reporter, Roy (guest star David Paymer), who also writes for a girlie magazine; and a Buttery gossip columnist, Corinne (guest star Millie Slavin), who has her own unique definition of news.
