(McCombs was then a stu dent at North Carolina Cen tral.) The police officer, however, was allegedly a plains clothesman who en tered McCombs' apart ment without identifying himself - the officer was also waving a gun and McComb's shot, he says, in self-defense. Lawyers found 98 errors in the first trial, according to members of the Me* Combs Support Commit tee McCombs was granted a new trial by the N.C. Court of Appeals But be fore it could be held, the N.C Supreme Court over turned the ruling. Lawyers are now appealing the case to the Fourth District Court of North Carolina in Greensboro. The group applied for a six month planning grant in September, 1978 The award notification was re ceived in November. 1979.
