BY BILL JOHNSON —w m 9 THE $1.98 RAP SESSION. If you live by high principles you will not have to tell anyone. It would appear that finances are getting tighter at the predominantly black schools ; at the college level. Morris Brown College • basketball coach and athletic director Charles Hardnett quit his post recently, citing “It’s been too little monetary com pensation and not the best support.” Hard nett accepted a position with the Atlanta Parks and Recreation Department because he was “tired of working on a shoestring budget.” GramMing will make history next fall when the Tigers cattle Southern Methodist University on tne gridiron. It will become the first time the famed Tigers have taken the football field against a predominantly white school during regular season. There are some men in public office who ought to be in private life. Racing buffs will be interested in knowing that Charlotte’s ’81 collector car flea market-antique car show and old car auction is coming to town April 10 for a three-day stand at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Some last-minute basketball notes, not of tournament interest.Hampton set three school records during the past campaign.^ They established a new standard for shoot ing accuracy when Lionel “Gino” Mar ; quetti shot 57. from the floor. Hank Ford’s Pirates, who’ll return ll lettermen next year, also hit 49.7 percent of their shots from the field and they connected with 35 of 52 field goal attempts against Southeastern for a sizzling 67.4 percent. Would you believe the Chicago Bears paid . runningback Walter Payton $325.34 for each yard he gained during the 1980 NFL football - campaign? Payton was paid $475,000 last year. He gained 1,460 yards rushing. In the meantime, the Atlanta Falcons were com pensating their backfield duo of Lynn Cain and William Andrews with pittance in comparison. For example, Andrews and : Cain did not make $100,000 between them - fast fall. But together they rushed for 2,223 yards. Andrews earned $52,500 and Cain was paid only $45,000. The best show in town this summer will be found in Atlanta where the powerful Braves are going to make a serious run fdr the National League Pennant. Now that the college basketball season is winding down one wonders if a great deal of pressure will be brought to bear on Virginia’s famed sophomore Ralph Samp son. The 7’4” center turned down a bid from the Boston Celtics to turn pro last year. Already the scouts are saying that Sampson does not have the strength to play against the big boys and that his weakness may become more apparent in another year of collegiate competition. Isn’t that a cheap way to get a kid to sing? My guess is that either Notre Dame or Louisiana State will capture the NCAA Championship this year. The prediction is based on their performance last week. Wonder what the public relations people in - the ACC are saying now that two of their three teams got bumped in the first rounds ; of the playoffs? Could it be that the ACC is vastly overrated? I think so. The New York Mets have hired former star Cleon Jones as their minor league hitting instructor...Elvin Hayes, the dur able Washington Bullets’ star, says he will enter the ministry when his playing days ■ are over. Eddie Murray and Ken Singleton of the Baltimore Orioles have proven they’re men of exceptional worth. Both have purchased blocks of tickets to the Orioles 1981 home games to give to poor youngsters and the elderly. You’d have to take your hat off to Grambling and Southern, who went out on a limb to promote their own athletic event last fall. The gamble paid off to the tune of $192,945, slightly more than $66,000 each : more than the returns they received when the experts handled the promotion. Walt Frazier is currently earning more yearly as a legitimate executive than he did ‘ when he was performing so brilliantly in the NBA for the New York Knicks. Walt’s agency managers some of the nation’s top athletes. • Would you say that national polls aren’t ; worth a hill of beans? The Black College • Basketball Poll last week lists Johnson C. ; Smith in a seventh-place tie with Grambling ': State while Virginia State, a team that : whipped Smith twice during the season and came within an eyelash of winning the CIAA : Tournament, was placed in the 14th posi ; tion. And Norfolk State, which got bumped ■ out of the CfAA Tournament the first night, : is roosting in fourth place. ; Grambling will not play Morgan State in New York City next fall. His jump of six feet and four inches is one of the best marks of any high school senior in this young track season. And although the Trojan track team has not been a legitimate com petitor in years, he seems like a possible choice for an All-State if he keeps im proving. “I just try hard to do my best,” said Pettway, son of Mr. And Mrs. Moses Pett way of the Rolllngwood community. “I love track,” he added. "Next year, when I go to college I would like to run track and play football. That’s my other interest." Pettway, the Charlotte Post Spring Sports star of the week was an outstand ing tight end and wide receiver. He holds three of his school’s passing re cords. Pettway is also active in community affairs. He is serving in the 1981 Kappa Alpha Psl Fraternity Beau tillion Militaire. At Olympic, he is in the Key Club, and was on the basketball team. He plans to attend Gardner-Webb or North Carolina Central to major in Bio-Chemistry. Other outstanding per formances were recorded last week by Tony White and Durain Anderson of the West Charlotte Lions base ball team. Although they lost 7-6, White went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and Ander son was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Also Drew Berry defeat ed Andy Fink of Provi dence Day 6-1,6-4 and John Murphy defeated Todd Nel son 6-1, 64) as the West Charlotte Lions beat Provi dence Day 6-3 in tennis. ,mtm Charlotte Poet Year Support Helps!
