The Index re gistered 152.9, down 0.3 percent from the revised July level. Employment losses in the manufacturing sector and a shorter manufactur ing workweek were major contributors to the decline in the Index. Manufacturing employ ment was down 0 6 percent, primarily due to employ ment decreases in non durable goods industries. Employment in durable goods industries also de clined slightly, as did price adjusted average hourly earnings for manufactur ing employees. - • In the non-manufactur ing sector, employment was down in government, services and trade. How ever. contract construction employment rose 0.3 percent. The seasonally adjusted ^unemgloymen^atefor^ North Carolina was 6.2 per cent in August, up 0.7 percent from the July "" level. The national rate for August was 7.2 percent, up 0.2 percent from July.
