By Bill Johnson SPORTS BEAT Bill Johnson THE $1.98 RAP SESSION. Ii you’re smarter than anyone else around you, the world will discover in time, so don’t bother to tell people about it! Perry Harrington, second-year running oacK wno was just coming into his own with the Philadelphia Eagles, has been lost for the remainder of the season with a broken right leg. The former Jackson State star had taken over as first-string fullback. Freshman Gerald Fraylon continues to sparkle at North Carolina Central. The former Myers Park High School standout was selected CIAA “Rookie of the Week” last week. It was the second start of the year tor the Charlotte native and also his second successive week of being cited by the conference. It South Carolina State’s statistics are accurate, the Bulldogs’ great weakness can be found in their inability to defend well against the pass. SCSC stats also show that the Bulldogs are reluctant to put the oval in the air. They’ve thrown a mere 5l times in their first four contests, completing only 13 and had three intercepted. The embarrassment over in Hampton last Saturday will cost Norfolk State its national rating...Or will it? The Spartans were rated No. 3 last week in the Sheridan Network Poll an they’re 9th in the NAIA Poll. It’s official now! Dick Stockton and Bill Russell will handle the play-by-play and expert analysis for CBS Sports’ coverage of National Basketball Association games next season. The 40-game schedule, includ ing regular season, playoff and champion ship games, begins October 30. The regular telecasts will begin January 17, 1982. Let’s hope WBTV will carry them. John Merritt, the legendary football coach at Tennessee State, who formerly coached at Jackson State, has been ad-_ mitted to a Nashville hospital. Rumors say he probably will retire. Florida A&M will likely have a $200,000 football scoreboard when the next football season rolls around. It’s going to be the gift of a soft drink company. Did you know that five of the seven players that South Carolina State sent to the NFL last season are now playing professionally? Twelve Bulldogs are now drawing their paychecks from NFL teams. Reports from the Bahamas are that former heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali is overweight and is facing difficulties in shedding the extra pounds. Would you agree that a friend is someone who doesn’t expect any favors? Earlier in the year the experts around the MEAC figures A&T would contest S.C. State for the conference football championship this fall. Time has proven them wrong.A&T was dead last in the league’s standings this week, but Bethune-Cookman, an outfit that was lightly regarded at the beginning of the season, is in second place and keeping pace with Bill Davis’ Bulldogs. Look for Morgan State to rejoin the MEAC later in the year. Johnson C. Smith, Virginia Union and Hampton loomed as the “teams to beat” when the CIAA basketball team opened practice last week. Howard and A&T are considered the class of the MEAC. The West Charlotte Optimists appear to have a winner. At this writing, it appears that North Carolina Central will oppose Virginia Union in the first CIAA Football Championship game here Saturday, November 21. The Eagles will get a break this week because their game with Elizabeth City is classied as a "non-conference” contest and will not count against their loop record. However, the Eagles have a tough road to the championship game, with J.C. Smith, Bpwie State and Norfolk State waiting to knock them off. I BOLD PREDICTION FOR THE WEEK - A&T will kick Howard and S.C. State will have its hands full in turning back Florida A&M in Miami, Fla. Bethune-Cookman will continue to roll against Tuskegee while Bowie State mauls St. Paul’s. Fayette ville State will face little trouble in dispos ing of Livingstone, but James Madison will slip past Hampton. Virginia Union will upset Morgan. Winston-Salem will do what everyone else has done this season - ship Lenoir-Rhyne. Th two setbacks we suffered last week dropped our season record to 39-11-1.
