TAMARA OATES ...Independence senior Oates Reigns As “Queen” At Independence By l.uretta Manage Host Staff Writer Queen in): A woman foremost or judged to be foremost among others in certain attributes or ac complishments as beauty, etc. That's the definition Webster's dictionary gives tor the noun. Now. combine that defi nition with attributes like intelligence, warmth, charm and poise and you'll discover why Tamara Oates was chosen queen at Independence Senior High School. Upon the nomination of her homeroom classmates. Miss Oates, along with other candidates vying for the title of "Miss Inde pendence" began the pre liminary competition. Before a panel of judges, among who were city coun cilman Ron Leeper, TV news personality Vanessa Baxter and persons from the modeling school, all candidates fashioned three types of attire, dresswear, sports wear and evening wear and spoke about themselves, their interests and future plans. Five girls were chosen to compete in the final rounds of competition. They were given a question from a sealed envelope to answer, j Miss Oates, answering the question "What quali ties do I look for in a friend?”, apparently im pressed her judges with the honesty arid depth of her reply because at the end of •the contest,—Miss— emerged victorious. Sorority Hears Mrs. Caldwell Mrs. Audrey Caldwell, Assistant Librarian at Duke Power Company Technical Training Center on Lake Norman, was the speaker at the program meeting of Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Pi Chi Sorority. Mrs. Caldwell is a grad uate of St. Augustine's Col lege. with a B.S. in busi ness management and re ceived her master's in li brary service from Atlanta University, Atlanta. Ga She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sority and the Ebenezer Baptist Church. She is a regular volunteer at the American Red Cross In January 1981 she was chairperson of the WBT WBTV Blood Give In This was the Sorority's Book Review Month and Mrs. Caldwell gave a very de tailed report on Toni Mor rison's “Tar Baby ." Mrs Caldwell also ex plained the Red Cross Vo lunteer program and asked for volunteers in transport ation, nursing and through the giving of blood Serv>i.e awaius along wit#a book mark were given to the following sorors for their commun ity, church and sorority involvement: Lula W. Brown, Doreatha Davis, Julia Doby, Carolyn C Gib son, Sadie C. Grigg. Ge raldine Brandon, Margaret Harris, Ethyle L. Haynes, Margaret John son, Roberta Lyles, Ethel K. Maxwell, Mable Reeder, Francella Mason. Hallie Zanders, Lucille Wither spoon, Mae Williams, Vir ginia Stepteau, Margaret Johnson and Johnsie Yongue. Hostess was Mrs Do reatha Davis Having earned the title of Oueen at Independence, Miss Oates will compete against the other high school queens for the title of Carrousel Princess However, that will not be revealed until the eve of the Thanksgiving parade. A senior at Indepen dence, Miss Oates actively participates as captain of the Varsity Cheerleaders, a member of the NAACP. the Leo Club, the Civinettes and the Fellowship Chris tian Athletic Association. At St Paul Baptist Church where Miss Oates is a member, she is on the I'sher Board. In her leisure time Miss Oates enjoys arts and crafts, sports and music. After graduation. Miss Oates plans to study in the field of architecture at 'UNCC or North Carolina State University in Kaleigh. Miss Oates is the daugh ter of Limuel and Juanita Oates. Wine And Sp Was A “Night To Remember” Traditions, once estab lished give us all something to look forward to The M. CarotTFersPStrrl lie Club pre- - sented their annual Wine Sip and Dip recently at the Excelsior Club and made it a "night to remember." Each member brought a ill'll lii thn affair and after refreshments had been devoured, members and friends cleared the table and prepared to watch a spectacular fashion show. Different from many fashion shows each model showcased their own creations But the fashion show only began the fun, a disco was held and every one did their best to party. Originally, Sarah Ste vens was chairman for the function, but Amanda Adams took charge of the entire affair and must be commended for a job well done. Other Shrine club news is that Lelia Drakeford at tended the Elks National Shrine Celebration on the 17th of October and on October 24 the M Caroth ers Shrine Club elected officers. Newly elected of ficers are: Ella Baker, pre sident; Margaret Caroth ers. organizer; Florence Burke, vice president. Dorothy McMurray. re cording secretary; Ethel Hines, treasurer. Frances Mobley, financial secre tary; Annie Lawrence, chaplain; Barbara Adams, sergeant-at-arms; Luanda Blackmon, public relations reporter , Annie Williams, social chairperson; and Sarah Stevenson, project chairperson. The remaining members are Millie King, Amanda Adams, Betty Houston. Mattie Caldwell, Marian Darby, Harriett Rawlin son, Sarah Funderburk. Marva Saunders, Lillie Horton, Emanuel Green, Dorothy Williams. Edward Hogeul, Hosey Williams and Minnie Williams.
