Trustees of Winston
Salem State University
(WSSU) announced here
last week that the Univers
ity will launch a $3 million
capital gifts campaign in
December.
According to WSSU
Chancellor Dr. Douglas Co
vington, the campaign will
supplement state and fe
deral continuation grants
and will be used to provide
support in the areas of
greatest need, including
new construction, renova
tion and program improve
ments. _
Edward A. Horrigan Jr.,
executive vice president of
R. J. Reynolds Industries,
Jnc. and chairman and
•hief executive officer of R.
J. Reynolds Tobacco Co.,
will head the effort, known
as the “Enhancement
Campaign,” as general
chairman.
Other Enhancement
Campaign leaders include:
John W. Davis IIL, Samuel
B. Witt III, Dalton D. Ruf
fin, Marshall B. Bass, Jo
seph Battle, Lillian D.

III and Chancellor Coving
ton.
“This is the first capital
gifts campaign in the Uni
versity’s 89-year history.”
Horrigan said at a news
conference held on the
WSSU campus to announce
the program.
Horrigan noted that
“WSSU has conaucced an
intensive study of its ope
rations and programs and
determined that an expan
sion and strengthening of
the University's programs
is needed to meet current
and future needs ofthe
community.”
Dr, Covington explained
that “the WSSU Enhance-'
ment Campaign is a key
part of a larger enhance
ment program that is to be
financed largely by the
State of North Carolina.”
The staler Tie said, will
provide major support over
the next several years to
WSSU for the creation of
new community services,

new buildings, renovation
Letter To The Editor
Administration Has No Money?
Dear Editor:
The administration has
no money for anything ex
cept the B-l bomber. A long
time ago the American
Friends Service Commit
tee said that the Soviet
..Union would be destroyed
by rockets long before'B-ls
would ever arrive there.
Now maybe the U.S. does
nand rnmp tnrt nf vehicle in
order to carry troops, drop
bombs in a Vietnam-type
war or for the generals to
lolly gag around in.
Well, why not send these
specifications to the air
craft manufacturers? Tell
them to build an aircraft
that can take off like con
ventional jet air crafts, but
when it is on the edge of
space it can fire some
rockets, sending it into
orbit. Then when it has
arrived over the target
area it can come down and
deliver whatever is needed.
Such an aircraft mass
produced would show to the
Soviet Union our technical
superiority. I can’t under
stand the Russians and
their military build up.
What are they planning to
A>, kill all of us because we
won’t accept an economic
system that is unable to
grow enough food even
with the large land mass
that the Soviet Union has?
Our economic system also
has some bad apples such
as the organized unions
that price cars out of the
market or workers who
want things like double
time and half.
All that I want out of life
is three meals and a roof,
hut I havp hn^ a hard tirpj*_.
getting that and there are a
lot of other people like me.
I think it would be fairer to
all of the works if the
le^^tor^wouj^egislate
labor practices. But right
now the agricultural work
ers don’t get time and one
half for over eight hours. I
worked in a green house
and that place was like.a
factory. Though people de
seryg time and one half. If
Food Town and Kroger
think there is money in
staying open the Sabbath
—finv thnn thnir nrr
day then their workers are
entitled to time and one
half. We have too many
people who think that
greed is more important
than God. When they go up
for judgement they will be
sorry about that mistake in
judgement.
Sincerely,
Bill J. Bloomer

An expansion of Wacho

Charlotte has been com
pleted.
The office, located at 6555
Morrison Blvd., now has
five private offices, eight
teller stations, additional
parking spaces and easier
access to the drive-up
lanes. About 1,400 square
feet was added to the build
ing for a total of 4,573
square feet. “We believe
that our customers will
enjoy the additional pri
vacy and convenience this
more spacious facility
offers," said Harold G.;.

ot some existing buildings
and bolstering and im
provement of existing
curriculum.
"The $3 million expected
to be raised from the pri
vate sector through the
WSSU Enhancement Cam
paign," Horrigan said, “is
. designed to fund priority
needs for which full state
support is not available."
Funds to be raised by the
campaign include $1 mil
lion for the new business
building, *1.3 million for
the Blair Hall addition,
*500,000 for an endowment
_ fund for student scholar
ships and *200,000, for en
dowment to fund priority
programs and curriculum
needs, Horrigan said.
"The improvements are
essential for the University
to realize its potential as a
toR"h2tch educational insti
tution, and win be possible
only through the gerferous
support of the private sec
tor," Horrigan said.
"Presently, the Univers
ity receives approximately
75 percent of its support
from state appropriations.
The state's projected five
year budget increase for
WSSU of just six percent is
insufficient, to support
existing programs. And
much needed new pro
grams," he said, “cannot
be implemented without
additional funds.
"Success of the Enhance
ment Campaign will be a
long stride toward the de
~ vetopment of an outstand
ing full-service public uni
versity for our progressive
area," Horrigan said.
WbSu is one ol lb con

increase in enrollment. The
University today serves
some 2,270 students with a
faculty of 128, of which
nearly one-half hold doctor
al degrees.
Founded in 1892 to edu
