Diana Ross’ “Why Do Fools Fall

So what was going down before
the "Motown” sound? The Smith
sonian put it in perspective re
cently with a weekend seminar on
black gospel a cappella quartets,
reassembling the Fairfield Four
• active from 1921 to 1955) and
presenting the Sensational Night
ingales, six of the Four Eagles and
the Sterling Jubilee Singers.
Rev. Sam McCrary, I can report,
is about as hot as he ever was. His
Fairfield Four along with the Blue
Jays probably did more to usher in
the doowop era (and subsequently
rock n roll, Elvis and modern
soul) than any other performers.
Although they no longer feature
the Rev. Julius Cheeks, the flam
-boyant-shouter^ the Nightingales
still put out very fine recordings.
Their "Saints Hold On" is a rouser
with considerably more imagin
ation and listening appeal than
much "formula" rhythm and blues
schlock dumped out by pop per
formers under contract. The
album of the same title, their 1981
offering, and “All About Jesus"
are available at your local reli
gious record store or by mail from
Malaco Records, P. O. Box 9287,
Jackson, Mississippi 39206.

The issue of black performers on
cable TV may be out in the open
after a fiery exchange that took
place in Los Angeles. A conference
of video executives turned heat
ed when A&M Records vice presi
dent Jeff Ayeroff contended that
Wamer-Amex MTV will pay
Rick James. Neither James nor
Warner were represented. Other
concerns expressed were for home
taping. Sale of blank tapes, which
don’t earn royalties for artists and
producers, continue to bother the
entire music industry...except, of1
course, for the manufacturers of
blank video and recording tapes.
Polygram Records is introduc

"Imagine Heaven." Of late, Hawk

virtually inconsequential. I
haven’t heard this one yet, but if
it’s good. I'll let you know.

addition to his tenor and soprano

is a voice to conjure with, but if an
artist like George Benson can sing
to achieve pop success (and the
dollars that go with it), why
shouldn't Ronnie. Both gents have
paid their dues.
