For Black Youth Worid Offers Little Or No Hope For Bright Future H> (iii)!*• IliiiMm * ^5 Post Stall \\ riter In this day and age when so much despair and nega tivism abound young black people may look around them and decide that this world offers little or no hope for a bright future It takes a lot of hope and courage for our young peo ple to pursue their goals without giving up. It is much easier to give up and blame our woes on society than to persevere despite all odds • • However. - there^ we many energetic, ambitious young people here in Char lotte who are setting an example lor others by pur ..sumg their dreams One of TT)ese*Ts~'Ce3fTc"' Jones, 20. a graduate of Uaringer High School Ce dric is ,s|udvine at Massa-_ -chusetts Institute oi Tech-' nology i MITi to become a chemical engineer. Cedric was motivated to become a chemical engineer when he was in the loth grade and recruiters told him that only seven percent of the engineers in America are black. He then went through a summer progra at Georgia Institute of Technology in engineering Cedric attributes his pa rents encouragement for being partly responsible for where he is now. “My parents are always open to allowing me to do whatever I wanted to do education ally. They said I should be able to get into any school that I wanted to go to," he said. Cedric suggests t<5 other aspiring youths that educa tion is the key. "Study hard and work hard." he ad vised "even though you may not be able to see the value ol a good education in the long range that will be the thing that pays off " Cedric is the son of Mr and Mrs. Cedric Jones. Crystal' Mobley is an other shining example. The 2(i-year-old sociology ma jor is a student at UNCC.. Crystal says she was in spired to go into social work because, "I felt a need to go out and help people and thought that ■social work would enable me to help people more in my community." In the meantime Crystal is making a name for her self in the fashion world. She is a member of the National Beauty Culturist and is sponsored by Betty Alsbrook. She has traveled to many exciting places doing fashion shows: At lanta. New Orleans. Win ston-Salem. Burlington and Charleston In the works tor 1982 is a possible chance to do a show in London, Kngland This energetic young lady has been a cheerlead er. ran track, been Miss Blue and Gray in high school, is Alpha Sweetheart of the Alpha Phi Alpha traternily and is a member ol the Black Student Union. Ms. Mobley's goals are to linish school, get her B S degree in social work and become a very successful businesswoman.
