Statesville Avenue Church Celebrates 30th Anniversarv Statesville Avenue United Presbyterian Church began its charge in 1952 when it was formally established as a church. Now three decades later the church is celebrating its 30th anniversary. In 1949 the Catawba Sy nod of the Presbyterian Church of the United States of America began work to overhaul its outmoded churches and to put new churches where they were needed. At first renovation and improvement projects by local congregations were stressed. However, the con —gregation and presbyteries decided they would team together at the synod level to tackle church extension and manv other projects. In Catawba Presbytery a survey was made by the Trustees Hi Hie Double Oaks area of Charlotte. The survey produced evidence that mission work was needed in the area and the presbytery felt that the op portunity could not be passed up. On April 14, 1950 two lots were purchased at States ville Avenue Terrace by the trustees of Catawba Presbytery. On July 1,1951 the Rev. Thomas A. Jen kins was placed in charge of the work. At his ap pointment definite plans were started as he explored the possibilities of a new Alter mucn etiort ana hard word Rev. Jenkins finally succeeded in ga thering a small group to gether. The group made — clear and emphatic that they were interested in a church, not a mission. They decided to meet on Sunday mornings for wor ship services without the knowledge of a meeting place Through the wor k of Rev Dr. Raymond Wors ley, who at the time was an employee of the Parks and Recreation Center and di rector of Double Oaks Re creation Center, permis sion was granted to meet in the recreational hall.
