Edmonds History Collo quim is ’’The Black Church in Historical Perspective.” Topics to be covered in clude the involvement of the black church in politic al and civic affairs. i ne program includes morning and afternoon ses sions on Friday. March 5. a luncheon at 12:15 Friday. Saturday (March 6i morn ing sessions and a banquet on Saturday evening at 7 — p.m. Both the luncheon and the banquet are at the W. G. Pearson Cafeteria Other sessions are at the Alfonso Elder Student Union with the exception of one at White Rock Baptist Church at 7 p.m Friday. The session at White Rock focuses on the life of Rev. Miles Mark Fisher, long-time pastor of that church. Fisher was a min ister and a scholar. The luncheon speech on Friday will be delivered by Dr. Alton Hornsby Jr. His address will deal with the social, political and civic impact of the black church throughout history, consti tuting an overall survey of the conference theme He is the editor of "The Journ al of Negro History" and a professor at Morehouse College in Atlanta Saturday's banquet will feature an address by Dr. Charles Lyons, chancellor of Fayetteville State Uni versity All other conference par ticipants are Ph D holders who studied (either at the undergraduate or graduate level) with Dr. Helen G. Edmonds at NCCU. Dr. Edmonds is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Hi story at NCCU, author of several books, a former member of the United States Delegation to the U.N., a nationally known leader in women s organ izations and in the Repu blican Party. Tommy Williams Wliains, Roeebud Win King And Queen Crowns The King and Queen of Hearts of the Second Ward Alumni, Charlotte Chap ter, were recently crowned during an enchanting ball. Tommy Williams was crowned King of Hearts while Rosebud Julius domed the fashionable queen’s crown. Dr. Mildred Baxter Davis, presided over the affair and Jerod Green was the overall chairman. Hawthorne To Participate In Summer FYogram Robert Hawthorne, a Livingstone College junior, has been selected as one of twenty science and engtneermgstudentsfronT across the nation to parti cipate in a summer insti tute at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Chiacago, Illinois. Hawthorne will work and study as a research assist ant with the laboratory’s electrical engineering team. He is currently in Livingstone's Dual Degree Engineering Program which trains students in basic science, mathema tics and computer pro gramming for approxi mately three years, then' they transfer to either Georgia Technical insti tute or Clemson Univers ity to complete their en gineering degree. A Dean s List student, Robert recently received a $1,000 scholarship from the United Negro College Fund and a scholarship from the College’ Board Scholarship Service. He is also listed in “Who's Who Among Stu dents in American Univers ities and Colleges." While serving as captain of the Livingstone wrestling team, Hawthorne twice earned all conference and all district honors. Hawthorne is the son of Ms. Rosemary Hawthorne of Philadelphia, PA, and attended the Episcopal Academy in Philadelphia where he was a national wrestling champion his senior year in high school.
