DENTAL HINTS Brought To The Community By Spurgeon W. Webber. D.D.S. Spurgeon Webber 1 Preventive Dentistry The rapidly developing emphasis on preventive ..dentistry.has ledJd.anexamination of pattems of the use of professional dental services in" the* Umtetf. States. While more people than ever before are going_ to dentists for the care they need, overall usage of available dental services still remains low in comparison to other health services. In general, studies show there are four important variables that determine who visits the dentist: age, race, education and occupational status. People between the ages of 14 and 24 years have the highest percentage of professional dental care. Children under 14 years, and adults over 24, use dental services significantly less. According to several studies, whites tend to make more frequent visits to the dentist than non-whites, and usually receive more preventive treatments] such as cleanings, preventive evaluation examina tions, etc,... The educational background seems to have a. significant impact on use of available dental services. There seems to be a direct relationship between the amount of education and usage. But seemingly, the most important variable in dental care utilization is occupational status; pro bably because the occupation is directly related to the amount of money available to spend for dental health services. The implication of low dental care frequency is that the public, for the most part, does not place as much importance on dental care as it does on overall health care. This is a misconception since all health care is of equal importance in the long run consideration. Increases in professional dental care usage can only occur with increased public awareness of the necessity for it. Preventive dentistry can definitely decrease the incidence of periodontal and other diseases, and ultimately decrease the need for restorative services.
