YUU SAW IT HERE! .
. .People who stand outside the church and
criticize those on.the inside have very little
odo!
Has anyone seen a sweet, feminine,
a ay-like character on television recently9
Dh, well!
If you’re interested in trying your luck
with a professional football team and feel
you’re not quite good enough to make it with
the. NFL teams, you might want to take a
trip up to Baltimore for a tryout with the
Baltimore Warriors, a semi-pro outfit that
is a member of the Delaware Valley
Football Conference. Coach Dick Burton
and his staff are looking for players of
“quality.”
iir why Johnson C. Smith is not
) a radio broadcast network to send
ay-from-home games back to
e? Such a network woiild not only
extra cash, it would also develop
interest in our athletic teams. It's a
ay to build a huge following,
i Peete slipped a few notches on the
00 top golf rponev winners on the
last week. Smooth-swinging Peete
« v^ned $46,916 so far this year. At the
same time, popular long-ball hitting Jim
Dent has climbed up to 61st spot, with
. slightly more than $25,000 in earnings,
i Research reveals that only six percent of
the college football players drafted by the
pros came from predominately black
schools...Accordingly, there were 330
athletes chosen and only 20 from black
colleges. Some experts place the blame on a
"lack of top flight talent.” Tennessee State
and Mississippi Valley State have entered a
two-year agreement to play football in the
famed Memphis Liberty Bowl, beginning
this fall.
/
i Look for the Los Angeles Lakers to offer Sin
Diego an attractive package of talent for its
leadoff spot in the upcoming NBA dra't. If
the deal can be made, the Lakers will go all
out to get Virginia’s Ralph Sampson in their
mid. Local rumors report that A1 Attlee is
interested in Phil Flores of Johnson C.'
Smith. I find that difficult to believe. Almost
as difficult as believing the repojts labeling
Rick Mahom, formerly of Hampton, as the
"meanest, toughest and dirtiest” player in
the NBA.
Phil Busher says J. C. Smith has recruit
ed three lovely young women for its basket
ball team. “To date we’ye not signed any
male athletes for our basketball squad,”
Phil informs. Norfolk State, which has an
impressive history for corraling top ath
letes, has signed Ann Theus, supposedly one
of the most prolific scorers ever to play
basketball in the Tidewater areas.
While the fussing rage over Yankee
shortstops Bucky Dent and Roy Smalley -
who is better and who should have more
playing time, etc. - Larry Milburne is being
overlooked. If you recall, Milburne led the
Yankess into the World Series last fall while
playing the position,
Julius Irving rammed home 164 dunks
this past season. His Philadelphia 76ers
teammate Darryl Dawkins was credited
with only 50 dunks. Buck Williams set a New
Jersey Nets record for rebounds. The
former Maryland star grabbed 1,005 his
first year in the pros. The Boston Celtics lost
only six times in the Boston Garden where
every game was played before a sellout
crowd.
My guess is that Boston will tangle with
the L.A. Lakers in the NBA Champion
ship series. The struggling Cleveland
Cavaliers have dropped $9 million in the last
two seasons...Surprisingly, the average
;ames increased by 5.7
u*. I believe that if the
attempt to get Samp
r James Worthy.
Moses Malone, who
he MVP of the NBA, is
ear to play basketball.
He’sklatad to become a free agent later this
year.
..Met You Didn’t Know That - Reggie
Jgdcson turns 36 on May 18? Or that the
NBA Playoffs will extend into the second
weak of June if it runs its full course?
While the national press was showering
high praises on the Atlanta Braves and their
sensational early season win streak, the San
Diego Padres were taking off like a space
shuttle . .All 58,838 tickets have been sold for
the 1982 All-Star Baseball Game. It will be
' in Montreal July 13.
Atlanta Braves have become one of
baseball’s hottest items. They drew 37,288
fans for their 12th win and their TV rating
has reached an all-time high. Thirty-seven
percent of all TV sets in use on a recent
Saturday night were timed to the game
while “Love Boat” and “Fantasy Island”
dreu^only a 29 share.
