After a wedding trip to Gatlinburg, Tenn., the Reaganomics Blamed For Higher Costs “Forcing hospital costs higher seems a peculiar way to achieve economic ' recovery,” North Carolina Democratic Vice Chair man Betty Speir of Bethel said last week. “We’re getting reports from hospitals all over North Carolina that they are being forced to in crease their prices for room and board and other necessary hospital services L. . .because of the Medicaid cutbacks caused by Presi dent Reagan’s budget last year," the Democrat con tinued “This means that people who are able to pay their hospital bill are forced to subsidize those who cannot. The hospitals have to get their money from some body “So even if a middle class family, like so many in North Carolina, have hospital insurance to help with their bill, they still have a problem' If the~hos pita) insurance company has to pay ever-increasing bills, they have no choice but to increase the insur ance rates that must be paid ” Speir noted that “for David Stockman and the other advocates of supply side economics -also k labeled the 'trickle down’ theory-the answer seems to be that if the nation just rwith Reaganomics, thing will eventually II right couple will reside in Charlotte. This figure comes from the Bureau of Labor Statisticsrpart of President Reagan's own Labor De partment. The same re port shows that 1.5 million Americans are classified as discouraged workers, the ones who have quit looking. Put the figures together and you have 12 million people who want jobs but can't find them. “Of course, President Reagan and some of his spokesmen, including Treasurer Secretary Regan, like to say that the reason people are out of work is they won’t read all those want ads and go get one of those good jobs there. “But speaking factually, the Bureau of Labor Sta _tistics reports that one of the fields of major increase in joblessness is among adult males. These are the fathers who have been working hard for their fa milies over a period of years. They don’t fit the Republican description of professional welfare people." Adams noticed that Democrats irf Congress have introduced a bill that would provide summer jobs for 203,000 people who would work on such pro jects as highways, bridges and public buildings, reha bilitate rural land stricken by drought or flood, main tain streams and lakes, and install ramps for the handi capped. “But this bill is not yet passed, and President Reagan would probably veto it because it would cost $1 billion and because it comes from the Demo cratic House of Represent atives^ Recently the Young women of Friendship Baptist Church, 3301 Beatties Ford Road, hosted its 1962 Debutants for Christ - pageant.
