(Photo: Peeler) Barely a year has passed since the inception of the Queen City Men’s Club, but during that time these members have firmly established their club in the local community. The Queen City Men’s -Club was conceived July 12 1982 when a group of young men with similar ideas and interests in the community decided to execute some ot their ideas through the for mation of ^club. Since the club was start —ed mpmhprc have aspired to enjoy social activities and provide their services to the communities. Several fundraisers which included tea discos, a raffle drawing, a fish fry and a baseball cap and visor sale have been spon Queen City Men’s Club Enjoys Social Activities sored by members of the club. During the Christmas season the Queen City Men’s Chib was able to make a donation to the WGIV Mountain of Food drive. Because of their commit ‘ merit 16 comrbilnity service the members have decided to donate monies and-or volunteer for at least three fundraising or community activities annually. The Queen City Men’s Club represents a unified mganizatiuii. Each uieim - ber is elected and held responsible for an office during the year and oc casionally you will see club members sporting their personalized maroon and gray jackets, T-shirts and caps. For Kathe rine Johnson, a rising ninth grader at Smith Junior High School, means learn ing hqw to become n leader. Ms. Johnson who was re cently elected vice-presi-' dent of the Executive Com mittee at Smith, along with other class officers and advisor, Inez Davis at tended the 24th annual summer leadership .Work shop sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Student Councils. Designed to help newly elected students to develop in areas of leadership, officer responsibilities, group activities and rela tions, the workshop was conducted by director Frances Bounds, and Dr. Ron Jeskel, associate Dean of the Teacher College of the University of Nebraska who served as the keynote speaker and consultant. Approximately 400 dele gates through North Carol ina attended the workshop. According to Ms. John son the leadership work shop was an overwhelming Katharine Johnson ...Rising ninth grader success, “i had a good time; the leadership work shop was a great experi ence,” commented Ms. Johnson. “I learned a lot about the government and the political process,” she added What she learned there she plans to utilize in the upcoming school year. “I’d like to promote people to become leaders, to spark more school spirit and create better student rela tions. I want to make Smith the heat jpnior high school around,” asserted Ms. Johnson.
