WOMAN OF THE YEAR
Janetta Horsley was recently named
“Woman of the Year" at Little Rock
AME Zion t hurch located at 403 North
Myers Street This year marked the
second annual observance. Last year’s
“Woman of the Year" was Barbara
Doster. She presented plaques to Mrs.
Horsley and second place winner Willette
Glenn and third place winner Theritha
Duren. Other ladies competing in the

Will Your Memory Decline?

cline as you get older? Drs.
Denise Park and Thomas
Puglisi of the University of
North Carolina at Char
lotte’s Psychology Depart
ment have been involved in
looking at that and other
memory research ques
tions for several years.
Their work is sponsored
by a research grant from
the National Institute on
Aging for the study of me
mory processes in humans
across the life span.
The Park and Puglisi
research compares the dif
ferences between picture
and word memory in older
adults. They map out the
components that make pic
tures and words me
morable and which com
ponents decline in impact
with age.
To determine what
makes a picture me
morable, Park and Puglisi
have developed well over
1,000 slides of words and
pictures in which various
components such as color
and background are
changed. Much of the re
search grant goes towards
the development of these
senes of slides. According
to Dr. Puglisi, the prepa
ration of the slides is both
“difficult and time con
suming.” Volunteers are
studied for their responses
to the slides.
